Pros and Cons other haven't mentioned - 11/11/2021
My husband and I moved to a cabin in the woods just outside Tyler in 2007, so we've been here almost 15 years.
Pros that other reviewers haven't mentioned:
1. very little wind
I hate windy weather. Tyler is literally the worst place in the US for a wind generator.
2. It's quiet, compared to other places. You rarely hear other people's music when you are sitting in traffic. Sirens are infrequent overall. There are no traffic or police helicopters. Very little air traffic noise. Restaurants generally play pleasant music and have TVs turned down low.
3. no freeways.
Otherwise, I agree with most of the other reviewers, except for the comments about drug addicts. I haven't encountered that.
When we first moved here, a local woman told me that people who live in East Texas just want to be left alone. I have found that to be true, esp. the people in the country.
Cons that no one has mentioned: snakes year round. We have a lot of warm days

Tyler, the city of unless. - 9/4/2021
I've lived in the city for 5 years (until 2007). In my opinion, Tyler is awfully boring unless you are an outdoor person. Tyler offers few cultural possibilities, and it is a sleepy isolated dark town at night. Unless you love going to Wal Mart, malls, car dealers, chain restaurants, and staying at home in the evenings watching TV, please disregard the previous sentence. Not a walkable city, Tyler is planned for vehicles, not for people. Unless you consider driving more important than walking, please overlook the previous sentence. In Tyler there are too many churches setting up the city's rhythm. Unless you are the classic churchgoer, please discard the previous sentence as heretic. 90% of Tyler residents are divided into five different groups -even though they share a common denominator-. 1) Wealthy white people, 2) White trash and red necks, 3) Poor black people, 4) Poor Hispanics, and 5) Retirees unable to afford a more amusing retirement. Common denominator? They are churchgoers.

Wouldn't Want to Live Anywhere Else - 6/16/2021
I have lived in Tyler over 20 years, and in the immediate area for most of my life. I would say that overall, Tyler is a good place to live. As many have said in other reviews, there are very few cultural activities, and not much to do entertainment-wise. However, it is only a two hour drive to Dallas where you can get all of that that your heart desires. Tyler's roads are not capable of handling the increases in population, i.e. driving in Tyler sucks! However, I would rather battle the traffic here than in a larger city. The schools are probably pretty much average--not the best, not the worst. My daughter graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and went on to get a PhD from The Ohio State University, so obviously she was able to learn something... There is a very strong Christian influence in Tyler. Lots of thugs and fake Christians - 11/29/2020
I’m not particularly fond of this town. The women are all rude drug addict trash that hang around thugs. People on Broadway are rude scumbags that think they are better than everyone else plus god awful traffic. The Walmart on Troup Hwy people try to run into you inside the store and don’t have the manners or decency to say “sorry excuse me.” Lots of rude spoiled millennial college kids that act like they were born with a silver spoon it kinda reminds me of Austin. Saving up so I can move to a much nicer state that has nice down to earth people! Oh by the way the people here will go to church acting like they love the Lord but once church service is over they go back to their rude nasty stuck up

Tyler is great stay OUT of LONGVIEW - 8/14/2020
I've lived here for the past 2 years and it is a great place to raise kids. The neighborhoods are quite and people are friendly. During this pandemic people have been cordial and overwhelmingly genuine. The city itself is growing fast as UTTYLER and its health facilities are among the best in Texas. Love Tyler , its culture and atmosphere.

My family moved to Tyler when I was four and I lived through the pain of growing up there until I moved at age 22. I won’t be back...
Crime: Tyler, Texas has a serious crime problem. In the ideal city, most areas are nice and there are only a few “sketchy” neighborhoods here and there. The entire city of Tyler is ghetto. The north side is the worst, with the east and west not far behind. The south side is the “nice” side of town, but even the south side it garbage compared to most cities. The biggest problem in Tyler, as far as crime, is drugs, and the problem is MASSIVE. For example, I was in sixth grade the first time I saw methamphetamine. I was literally 12. It’s bad. Tyler is a terrible place to raise children.
Job market: The job market is absolutely dreadful unless you work in the medical field. If you want to make $15/hour your entire life like most of the people who live here, maybe Tyler is a good place for you. I believe I read that the

Just OK is right! - 5/20/2018
I am from a military family and served my time in the service as well. I have lived in many different places and travelled to hundreds more throughout the USA and overseas. I’ve experienced many different climates and cultures.
Tyler has a lot of things going for it but unfortunately it has a few problems which for me are insurmountable and cause me to look forward to relocation.
The pros:
Low cost of living, cheap housing, and low crime rate.
Awesome medical facilities
Awesome hunting and fishing
Very much a family friendly atmosphere and decent schools
Generally friendly people but very cliquish
Nice Fall and comfortable Winters
Easy to get around, minimal traffic
Very green and pretty. Wild flowers are amazing in the Spring!
Good fried catfish, chicken fried steak and BBQ
The Cons:
Very Humid and BUGGY all year round
Very Humid AND HOT in the Summer - Like a sauna!

Tyler A Rare Gem of a City - 10/21/2017
I moved to Tyler a couple years ago from California and I love this rare gem of a city. It is a great place to live—especially if like me, you're burned out on overcrowded, expensive, high stress urban megacities. I promise I'm not with Tyler Chamber of Commerce! High quality of life is here in a beautiful, manicured, green city close to nature that is secure with low crime. Old growth trees shade a broad grid crisscrossed with creeks, green spaces, groomed parks, trails and byways. Tyler has a very low cost of living, low taxes, well maintained infrastructure, populated by friendly, diverse people. It has grown 34% since 2000, with a population of 103,000 in a sprawling piney woods metro area of 203,000. Tyler is in the urban Goldilocks Zone, big enough to have everything you need, small enough to be pleasant.
Culture: It is young and new mixed in an easy blend with old and traditional. You'll see way more tattoos and skinny jeans now than cowboy boots and pickups.
