We found people to be very friendly and welcoming, especially if you put yourself out there and get involved. It’s a small historic tourist town with a great trail, kickass theater and arts community, and a federal courthouse. There is an absolutely wonderful farmers market, butcher shop, organic food store, and wine shop. Outstanding live music is everywhere. Other than law and medicine, not a lot of local high paying jobs to be found in town, but if you can take your job with you the town is wired with excellent high speed fiber. Our block not far from the historic district completely turned over in the last two years, a mix of young families, retirees, and working professionals. There is a lot of investment and renovation in downtown and the area is on the up and up. A lot of the locals move away after high school and college for jobs and school, but come back to raise families. They often say it is a dramatically livelier place than 10-20 years ago. My husband and I are retired. We researched areas in SW Virginia and found Abingdon to be just what we were looking for. Our home is surrounded by mountains and close to everything. Came hear a few months ago after a couple of visits to the area. Had every intention of living the rest of my life here. Thought everyone was going to be accepting and helpful. Truth is... They are nice and helpful when your a tourist. They will gladly take your money. But if you want to move here and don't have a well known name around town or a lot of money, you are looked at like a piece of crap. Forget about getting a job. Employers here are some of the nastiest and rudest people I have come across. And to be told by TWO HR people at two different companies that I don't have a 'Southern enough, accent or southern charm' so they couldn't hire me is one of the most discriminating statements I have heard. My husband applied for a laborer position with the town after having worked in a government capacity for more than 21 years building streets and was actually sent a letter saying they hired someone with 'more qualifications.' We came to the area a few years ago and fell in love with the quaint, historic qualities of the town. However, once we moved here we came to find out rather quickly that the town loves tourists, and for people to spend money. But if you want a job here you'd better have a recognizable family name or a big bank account. Have spoken with quite a few people who have lived here all their lives who tell me it's all about old money and blood. We have sent Resumes for jobs here that we are OVERQUALIFIED for, and have either received form letters stating they found someone with " more experience" or can't even get a response from someone. I was even told by 2 employers that I didn't have a Southern enough accent for them to hire me! Common courtesy iOS lacking. Taxes are out of control and houses suck for the prices. Was told if your kids are in school here and you don't have money, the kids won't be playing sports. Never thought I'd say it, but I can't wait for the chance to find somewhere

Virginia Creeper Trail - 9/6/2009
I would like to see the trail made with a sidewalk and night lights so people could walk at night. I understand security concerns, but feel that with proper patrols in the area and more mobile police equipment, it would greatly help the many who are unable to be in the sunlight and those's who need a wheel chair to get around. Water fountains could be added and more benches. Make more rest area's with Tables to lunch on. With grants, it could be a walk of concrete with a horse trail and bike trails on each side.Let the walk go all the way to Whitetop Mountain. Have vidio security at the police station and hire employees to keep it policed
