The "antique" old west in Victorian architecture and Gold Country history combined with interested, interesting active people, in an easy-going living in the woods setting - the kind of place parents used to talk about retiring to.

What Jay is saying of Nevada City, is true of any area worth living, "growth." Nothing in California is as it was in 1982, change is inevitable. If any area doesn't experience even moderate growth in 30 years, it probably didn't have much to offer to begin with.
