Bakersfield is a University town, with an economy driven by energy and agriculture

I taught in Bakersfield years ago and was negatively impressed by the uniformity of thought. No independent thinking allowed. Other teachers at the college were fearful, some tyrannical, some cowardly, some with criminal pasts, etc. Most had a fair amount of training, but very little real education. Stifling. I left, thankful for the freedom I found elsewhere. This is definitely not a "university town".

You've got to be kidding. Those who go there to teach can't get a job anywhere else. Those who live there are old testament types and racists who never got on the Ark.
