Retiring in Cedar City
Star Rating - 1/14/2017
My wife and I retired in Cedar City a few years ago. First, I must say that Cedar has a wonderful location. There are beautiful views of the mountains, and it's a short drive to Cedar Breaks and other nice hiking areas. Bryce and Zion national parks are within two hours. The climate is pretty nice, although it does get cold for a couple months in the winter. Skiers can enjoy Brian Head ski resort, which is about 40 minutes away. Cedar City's great environment should make for an excellent retirement haven. However, one cannot ignore the social climate here. If you are not Mormon, you must accept the fact that you will be on the fringe of the social scene. People are outwardly civil, but do not expect to have a lot of friends here. Do not consider this town at all if you are young and single or have small children and are not part of the majority religion. You will be isolated. Don't be fooled by the reviewers who say how friendly and wonderful the people here are. They are probably realtors trying to paint an unrealistic picture. Fortunately, the situation is not too bad for most retirees. Most of us have hobbies and interests and can be happy with minimal social interaction. It's just unfortunate that this city is not progressive like Park City, Moab and a few other places in Utah. There is a lot of potential here, but we need progressive local government to move forward.

I strongly disagree Larry, Progressive politics, high taxes and violent crime are what most people are escaping from. It is unfortunate that so many people run from states like California, and then want where they land to be more like Cali. Could you not have found a place in your own progressive state to suit you? If I where from Utah, and I wanted to live a more conservative life, I would not move CA, and then complain that it is to progressive. I have lived in CA for 52 years, I can honestly say I used to love it here. Shooting guns, riding my dirt bike, surf and ski in the same day, it was awesome! Now I have no place to take my dirt bikes or UTV that isn't 3 hours or more away form my house, you have to get a back ground check and ammo card to buy ammo, and there is no chance at all at being able to buy a decent gun anymore. Your progressive park districts are even trying to annex OHV lands purchased with my OHV tags and turn them into hiking and equestrian use only. You must already know this Larry, because you obviously ran from it. Why would you wish this on a free state like, Utah?

What city are you living in? Weather you're a member or not has nothing to do with the amount of friends you'll make..... I'm from Riverside CA and have been here 5 years now and have more friends then I ever did in CA..... Some are members some aren't...... My wife and I are in our 30's with 3 young boys..... Life is absolutely wonderful out here!

I'm so sorry you have felt so excluded, it should not be that way. It is an ugly cultural issue. I am an active Mormon and plan on moving to Cedar City when I retire so I will remember your comments and take them to heart so that I will stay keenly aware of not adding to the unacceptable behavior of exclusion.

True what you said. For non-Mormons is awful to live there. If you rent be ready to be scam by Property Managements, and owners. There is no laws that even protect Mormons. If you own a home and the next door owner builds a fence or whatever, the scammers after the penny will be protected even if the land belongs to you. For renters they say NON SMOKING, however, is a town built on drugs. It is a shame a beautiful small town, full of scammers under a logo of religious people. Does not matter which religion, a bunch of lowlife junk. Not a 24 hr. Pharmacy, or super market, lacks civilization, and more important, a tremendous lack of GOOD, HONEST PEOPLE! SEX OFFENDERS ABOVE NATIONAL AVERAGE IN THAT SMALL TOWN, CHECK THE ZIP CODES 84720 or 84721. MOVE OUT THE MORMONS, BAPTISTS, SCAMMERS, REVIEW PROPERTY MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, BRING PEOPLE USED TO CIVILIZATION, TO CLEAN THEIR HOMES INSTEAD OF GOSSIPING AND FINGER POINTING AND COULD BE GREAT. THE MAJORITY OF HOMES INSIDE ARE DISASTER, NOT OPEN FEEL, DIRTY, NOT WITH NORMAL COMFORT, AND WHEN YOU FIND ONE, THEY WANT TO CHARGE FOR AS BEVERLY HILLS LIFESTYLE.

"progressive government" is one of the primary reasons why some of us are looking to relocate to places like Cedar. While I'm sure there are bad apples in the LDS community (just like there are in ANY group of people) I'm betting most are the kinds of folks who'd make good friends and neighbors... maybe unless and until others start trying to bring "progressive government" in to tell them how they should live.

"not progressive like Park City, Moab and a few other places in Utah. There is a lot of potential here, but we need progressive local government to move forward." Park City is bright blue, full of democrats. Don't move to UTAH and bring your progressive crap and voting that creates a climate like CA. No wonder people don't want to hang out with you. You might consider moving!

Larry - you need to move to CA. I moved from CA to get away from the Progressive BS that destroys states. If you’re a Democrat living here from another Democrat state such as CA, I hope you’re not my neighbor because we’ll have words. I'll be your worst nightmare. We moved from CA to get away from all that nonsense. Most people we’ve met are NOT Mormon and they can’t stand them. Kinda sad. This is a very Red, Conservative area. Love the fact that no one pays attention to the COVID BS. I could go on and on but - again - sounds like you’re a Democrat that needs to move to SLC or CA. Cedar City is actually a great place.

My friend, wherever you go, there you are. Friends, life styles, enjoyments, rewards and the like all travel with you. I just bought a home in Cedar City after exhaustive researching in neighboring states & cities. Best kept secret is Cedar City offering everything one would want, need or desire. The four seasons, Nature, community, decent people and retail establishments abound. I will compliment the place and support the high bar. What's to stop anyone from their life rewards?
