Review of Arca,

Cold, cloudy, wet, remote
Star Rating - 5/29/2017
It takes a special set of preferences to select Arcata. Is this you?

- You love clouds and fog. You are happy if you see the sun maybe 10-20 times a year.

- Chilly weather is great. After a loooong wet rainy season, you are happy to see the weather shift to windy and foggy all "summer." You are glad it rarely gets warmer than 65 degrees F, and usually is only 55 F in summer.

- You hate summertime. You'll love it here -- we don't get a summer. Fairbanks Alaska is warmer in summer than Arcata.

- Remoteness is great. You don't need access to quality healthcare, or a hub airport, or decent highways. You love driving for hours on winding two-lane roads to see you friends and family. Its great when landslides block roads in and out.

- You love really expensive gasoline. Probably the most expensive in CA.

- You really love paying super high prices to a monopoly air carrier with some of the very worst scores for delays and cancellations.

- Mildew and mold on your clothes, shoes, in your bathroom and bedroom and closets is great.

- You really dig all the mosquitoes that breed in all that standing water from the rain, drizzle, fog drip, etc.

- You don't need a job.

Sounds like to me you had a bad experience here. I see your review was written a number of years ago. Things most definitely are better now. The weather has changed probably because of global warming. But we get at least a good six months of Sunny warm weather. We have reached into the 80s and on occasion even the 90s right here in the Arcata/ Blue Lake area. We don't have a mold or mildew issue. I suspect that's probably because we've warmed up so much. And as for a job, many people create their own jobs online. Personally my daughter and I have both done adult private care. Which is a good money maker here. Also you can do an online sales business. My daughter sells clothes online, and just recently made $700 in one week. That's on top of her money she makes taking care of the old folks. So actually; there is a way to make money here. That's just the tip of the iceberg. It's lovely here, it's quite beautiful. There is no place in the world like it. When you consider there's the Ocean, the mountains and rivers, the Redwoods! Lots and lots of local activities. Excellent restaurants, many of them Oceanfront! The people are fairly friendly. Better than a lot of places. It's mighty quiet here in the nighttime, which I really like! As for expanse yeah it can be expensive but it's worth it. I'm sure if you really want to be here you could figure out a way to afford it! Thanks for listening, take care, sincerely Tammie
