Considering Raleigh move
Star Rating - 8/3/2007
I was considering a move to Raleigh. Obviously, the climate is nice and the area is reasonably priced. But, I was concerned about the "Yankee Go Home" mentality that some southern areas can have. I was wondering if there were any northerns in the area now that can tell me if that is a legitimate concern. Thanks.

You bet it's a legitimate concern. You will be treated as a Yankee when you move here. I encountered so much bitterness in the workplace and in general. If you make a suggestion about anything, you are considered rude. I grew up in New York, where if you didn't like something you stated it. You knew where you stood. The "southern mentality" is to be polite to your face, and then cut you up behind your back. I am looking to relocate. My old boss said that she visited Florida, (Disney World). I asked her nicely did she like it? She replied not really "too many Yankees"

and don't forget the nasty bugs, roaches, deadly spiders, poisonous snakes, billion mosquito's,and most of all, the abundance of inbred rednecks and their sleazy porn stores (BIBLE_BELT , HUH ?).It,s a really great place to raise your family!!!!! Most important of all . Southern hospitality my A!!!!! .I am very proud to say that i am giving up my hard built home improvement business and leaving this nightmare experience behind me and moving back north . Southerner,s can gladly keep their dried up muddy lakes, mexicans and ignorance,s. Do your home-work,this town has far too much brushed under the carpet. The south will rise again as quickly as the greed and stupidness of this town is going to fall hard on their faces. Yep, they can keep it, Joey G.

Most of the people spouting "Yankees Go Home" are fellow Yankees, like me, who came here 20 years ago and did so with the intention of experiencing a more wholesome atmosphere, a slightly slower pace and just old fashioned values. We fell in love with our community and our neighbors. A few years pass and suddenly we make a "best place to live" list, tons of Yankees start their migration, only to want to make this beautiful peaceful place, just like their previous home. They found fault with everything and voice their loud opinions. I have a saying, I've used in on a few relatives who moved here after visiting and then complaining - "I95 runs North as well as South" If any transplants aren't happy here, I'll be glad to escort you to the entrance ramp.

It seems that this particular thread is going crazy over unrealistic expectations and angry inconsiderate people, I find it amazing. the MARY postings are so out of whack. When we decided to move to the Raleigh area a couple of years ago, We flew down 3 times to check things out. I lived in so many parts of the country and I find the area in the top5 as reported by many news services. I've never seen or heard the reference to yankee anywhere. How could you have reference to yankees when 80% of the population around Raleigh is from NewYork, in 2 years i've only bumped into people I can count on one hand who actually grew up in the raleigh area, and rarely did I ever hear a southern accent. The raleigh haters on this site are completely off base, evry where I go I find newyorker, then people from new jersey then pensylvania, few others from different parts of the country, a lot from florida. 3 months of cold (~40-50F) 2 months of hot summer (80-90) the rest is incredible weather in the 70s... also no bugs, unless some of those people lived in some slums, what bugs!! schools are geting overcrowded in the past 2 years since there was an unusual number of people that moved to the area. the other stupid mention is about traffic. are you kidding me??? if you lived in NY NJ Boston area, that is traffic problem. in Raleigh, during rush hour it gets busy but no where like the Northeastern cities. plus you can change your trip pattern and you'll be fine. when I was in Boston I had to leave home (15miles away) at 4:30am to make the 15 miles in 45 minutes... The parks here are also incredible, beautiful, safe clean and so many of them. what parks did we have in the northeast? they're a joke compared to the NC parks, and no homeless drug addicts living there either. of course there are few random crimes, but no where near the numbers of NY, NJ etc and you can really tell where no to go to stay out of bad neighborhoods. If you have a family with kids and want a safe area with good schools and medical system, raleigh area is it. if you're single and want a hopping bar scene stay in NY state. because NC is majority new yorkers anyway, who escaped their northern home state.
