VANTUCKY!
Star Rating - 2/17/2010
Dood this town... haha... wow!! what to say!!...this town is extremely white trash.. i lived in Vancouver for about a year.. i came to live in Portland but didnt have money to afford a place there yet and i knew someone who lived in Vantucky so i was able to stay with them.. Im originally from Ohio... originally originally from Alaska. but anyways.. ive seen white trash in Ohio... i didnt think it would be the same in the west coast near such an awesome city like Portland. first of all Vancouver is no way in heck an alternative to Portland. 2 entirely different places. Vancouver is the suburban wasteland that all other suburban wastelands look up to. haha. there are huge empty lots and is very very spread out. you have to drive a car everywhere to go anywhere in vancouver.. West vancouver is extremely horrible there. rednecks in huge trucks smokin with their infant in the FRONT SEAT! there are bike lanes in this city but i never see anyone bike on them. i live in Portland and worked up there and road my bicycle in the lane..SOme old lady jsut flipped me off for no reason and i was just sitting stopped at a red light.. and then some other lady in a ghetto pontiac or whatever look at me with her meth teeth and her shirt was like half off yelled GO back to your side of the river!!! wtf!! haha people in vantucky are very angry and closed minded. in some parts there are expensive houses but i dont understand why becuase the area is a complete waste of space.. nothing cool to see except a bunch of big dumb rich houses that people for some reason spend there money on. There are a couple things i do like about vantucky i have to admit.. they have a restuarant called mongolian grill on mill plain and its soooo good. and youll see random little skatepark type things everywhere which is pretty cool. other than that its walmart infested and downtown... omg i swear i say a tumbleweed go by like the old westerns... freakin ghost town! nothing to do there except get drunk...you have to that in order to keep your sanity living there. whenever i go over there with my girlfriend to visit her parents when we leave, and see the sign that say welcome to Oregon!!! omg.. i get so excited eveytime...i say in my head... phew!! i made it back.

This is a very blinded and limited view of Vancouver. I have lived here four years now. I have lived all over the country due to a military lifestyle. I have seen ghetto. I have seen true white trash. There are poor and run down sections in any town. There are drugs and irresponsible parents in any town. They are not the majority by any means. Unfortunately there are some people who love to throw around uninformed viewpoints on both sides of the river. This individual is clearly in that group. Please read all comments on the web. This view is by no means accurate of the city as a whole. On an end note, we are not a suburb of Portland. The city may have begun that way; however, it is clearly now its own culture and socio-economic system. It may be different in some ways from Portland, but it is no way worse.

I've lived in Vancouver for the majority of my 59 years, and I think some of your comments deserve a response. So, in no particular order: 1. You have presented a VERY inaccurate view of the downtown area - especially the ghost town and tumbleweed comments, which are totally ridiculous. The area is actually quite developed and there are some very pleasant sections, Esther Short Park for starters. 2. White trash - I'm sorry to say that the trashy people to which you refer come in all colors. These people disgust me, too. 3. Bike lanes - That problem has improved. More bike lanes have gradually been added, and people are using them. 4. Yes, the city is spread out - I think this is preferable to the entire population being crammed into one area. 5. People being angry and closed-minded - You may be on to something there. I suspect that the anger has much to do with the gradual, but dramatic deterioration in the quality of life. This town isn't anything like it was when I was growing up, and many of the changes have made it a much less pleasant place to live than it used to be.

I've lived in Vancouver on and off since I was 7 years old. This is a bit of a limited review but I cannot say it's entirely untrue. Vantucky or "The Couv" as locals call it is very much the conservative red-neck area of the pacific northwest. People there ARE more closed minded politically and in terms of minorities and homosexuality, etc than any other part of WA or OR I have lived in. Downtown is GROSS, flat out gross! It might be a decent place to live in if you are a senior citizen as it has some very nice retirement homes (I was a CNA in Vancouver for 3 years and can contest to that), however... if you have a family, it may not be the ideal place to live. The schools are either bad or okay in the Vancouver area (though some surrounding/more "out there" schools like in Washougal can be very good) but none of them are great. There are very few parks. A lot of the people are ill educated and rude. All in all, it's not quite a 'blight' on the pacific northwest but it is far and away from the best city one could choose either.
