Review of Chattanooga, Tennessee

Air quality
Star Rating - 2/3/2009
I'm interested in what current Chattanoogans can tell me about the air there.

Chatttanooga is on my short list of potential retirement locations (I'm about 5 years away from retirement). But I've recently learned that the air quality there is rated as very poor. My wife is sensitive to bad air quality (although I wouldn't call it a health condition).

So, just how bad is the air in chattanooga? Does it impair or impact the quality of life, or is it a minor nuisance that receds into the background once you get used to it? As a visitor, would I immediately notice poor air quality?

Any input is appreciated!

The pollen arrives in biblical proportions during the spring. Most families have a personal relationship with an allergist and there seem to be a lot of kids with asthma. Our first year here was rocky, but we have adjusted to the air quality. I have seasonal allergies, and we work through it. I would visit in the springtime, and gauge your wife's response.

I have lived in Chattanooga for about two years now, and my wife is also very sensitive to air (not a health either). We will be moving whenever possible. She gets nauseated when outside during the summer for more than about thirty minutes or whenever in the car for the same amount of time. The city has made great improvements in air/water quality over the last thirty years but the effects are still felt. A few months ago the local paper ran an article that some scientist had been studying the relation of air/water quality in the area and compared it to birth weights of infants and several parts of the city had noticeably lower birth weights than the national average due to the long term affects of pollutants in the area. My suggestion is if your wife is sensitive to air quality do not move to Chattanooga. Try to fing an area with a continual breeze, whether it is an ocean breeze or western mountain winds, but Chattanooga sits in a bowl and does not ever "air out".
