Air quality

I'm interested in what current Chattanoogans can tell me about the air there.
Chatttanooga is on my short list of potential retirement locations (I'm about 5 years away from retirement). But I've recently learned that the air quality there is rated as very poor. My wife is sensitive to bad air quality (although I wouldn't call it a health condition).
So, just how bad is the air in chattanooga? Does it impair or impact the quality of life, or is it a minor nuisance that receds into the background once you get used to it? As a visitor, would I immediately notice poor air quality?
Any input is appreciated!
