I go through there occasionally and had to spend a couple of weeks in downtown Jackson while my husband was in the hospital. The crime rate might be high but the people there are generally very kind and helpful about finding necessary services and directions. It has a small town atmosphere in that regard. Murder rates are low. Racial tensions seem lower than in other diverse communities. I think a cautious person could find a good home at a good price in Jackson. I think it is a good place for retirees and natural living. There are many lakes and farmer's markets nearby.
