Review of Chattanooga, Tennessee

Outdoors and Groups are the plus.

I'm gonna try to give an honest review because I didn't do enough research before moving here. I have been here about 10 years now. It isn't the best place but it's definitely far from the worst. There are a TON of outdoor activities and just as many groups if you want to make friends or be social. Triathlon is big here too with the Ironman events. Housing prices are definitely on the rise with the population burst. This leads me to the downsides. The traffic can be horrific. I-24 is a major thoroughfare for 18-wheelers and they can congest the interstate. The job market seems fairly good though. I am an in engineering and have only held two positions in the 10 years I have been here but work seems steady and well compensated. Manufacturing can be a fickle beast though and I have seen quite a few lay offs while living here. All in all Chattanooga isn't terrible. I wouldn't go too far West though. I made the mistake of buying a house in South Pittsburg. That place should be avoided at all costs. I would read the negative posts and apply that logic to that area for sure. People are so far inbred you'd think it was a halloween costume contest. Don't get me started on the radiating stupidity of that area. First winter after buying my house, my waterline broke by the meter. No big deal, I can fix it. So I dig a hole around the water line in the freezing cold after work. I'm covered in mud determining what I need to do to fix it when the local Barney Fife comes rolling up with his lights flashing. Jumps out of the car and demands to know what I'm doing. So I calmly explain, the water line broke and I'm trying to fix it. "Do you live here?!" ...No... I'm just a really nice citizen fixing someone else's water line. He proceeds to demand to see some ID and hassles me for an additional 20 minutes. Long story short....avoid South Pittsburg.
If you have a small child or children, Chattanooga is pretty great. There are a lot of activities for the kids. The zoo is small but awesome, the Hunter art museum and sculptor garden is a great afternoon, then you have all the tourist stuff like the aquarium, Rock City etc.
So, weigh your pros and cons. Traffic is terrible, housing is expensive but outdoor activities are plentiful and it's quite beautiful in the fall. Just avoid South Pittsburg for the love of the sweet baby jesus.

I'm dying laughing about your comments about South Pittsburg. I am from a BIG South Pittsburg family. My Grandmother was one of nine children. She nailed a note to the front porch of her parent's house and told them that she was crossing the river and moving to Chattanooga. That was probably about 1915. I loved going to visit family there when I was a kid. And I never pass up a trip to the Lodge Factory. But to live there - OMG!!! What were you thinking? LOL

How about the crime? I live in Columbia South Carolina since February 2013. We moved from Tampa, Florida. Before that I used to live in Cleveland, Ohio since I was 12 with my dad then in 2003 moved with my kids to Florida worst moved ever wanted to go back the next day but never did until 2013 with my family. Schools in Florida are terrible have a son with cerebral palsy and was been bullied in school the teacher had him seat by the door away from everyone. I found out later on was horrible the last surgery they did to him was terrible his legs started to turn and his walking got worse with the walker. After moving here to South Carolina that’s when they were able to fixed it and when I contact the hospital they told me 2 years passed nothing I can’t do Florida is a no fault state! Plus when we move to Florida from Ohio my son started suffering from seizures since we moved to South Carolina the seizures stopped completely we are so happy for that. The doctors think has to do something with the atmosphere there don’t know but I believe that too. I’m glad we got here it’s been great so far. Now my kids and my husband wants to move to Tennessee cause the rivers the mountains and all the beauty. We bought a house here in Columbia in a great area low crime etc huh but all of the sudden it has converted into trash lost of people have moved and it’s okay. But crime has gone up. We got shootings in the area. People breaking into cars that’s the bread of the day! It’s ridiculous on a area of 35 miles where people are walking with their dogs, running and walking people drive like animals from 35 miles up to 60 many accidents in the area the place has turn into a shi... hole sorry about my words the association fees are ridiculous but they do not patrol the area I have 3 cameras in my house because they put a screw attached with a chain I was mad crying we had just bought the car brand new. I wasn’t the only victim a week after they did it to my son. My neighbors have sold their homes in a matter of 4 months 2 sold their homes and I renter moved before their lease end. My husband is very sick and tired of the area. Association is very good to sent notices about even living your garbage can a day after the garbage is picked up but when it come to deal with controlling the area they don’t care. My husband installed garage doors he makes pretty decent money. My kids work at the hospital. So I would like to know if you can tell me about the that if possible. Also I have a 9 year and a 8 year old at a Montessori school and I would like to have them at a Montessori school in Tennessee as well. My 8 year old have selective mutism and he was been bullied at a regular school before here in kindergarten. Any information anyone can provide would be appreciated. Thank you
