Review of Newcastle, California

Not the best place, not the worst.

I’ve lived here for six years, and it’s been an interesting experience to say the least. If you’re liberal, don’t expect many people to outwardly share the same political views as you. It’s pretty solid Trump country. Not to say liberal views don’t exist, but the amount of Trump signs are quite shocking especially if you’re coming from the bay area. Summers are extremely hot and dry, then fire season comes around September through October, which means pretty constant smoke. When it rains in the winters, it pours. There really isn’t anything to do in Newcastle. You kind of need to go to Auburn or Sacramento to have a good time. Local schools are fine, but nothing to be prideful about. We actually have the slowest internet of all rural areas in the country, so don’t expect great internet, especially when everyone’s working from home. There is very little racial/ethnic diversity. I guess benefits would be that you can get a lot of land, and have privacy while still being fairly close to a major metro area (downtown sacramento is 40 minutes away) if that kind of thing suits you. It’s really safe, and significant crimes are pretty rare. I’d say it’s a great area to live if you’re mildly-moderately conservative, in your late 50s/early 60s, white, and don’t care much about convenience. If you’re within any other group, don’t expect to feel accepted or happy living here.
