As for low crime, that may be your perception. But my research has shown that Lafayette, like most of Louisiana, has a very high crime rate, compared to the rest of the U.S. Its education ratings for the pubic schools is not good, compared to the rest of the U.S. Its economy, like most of La., is dependent on the energy sector to a large point, although it is more diversified than most of the rest of Louisiana. I've seen references to Lafayette as a small city, but I would call it a mid-sized city. It would be a great area for gardening, kayaking and water sports, enjoying music (a lot of musicians in Louisiana!), and of course cajun food (although I've found that food is good everywhere; it's just that La. has the cajun food downpat, of course). You will find that there are generations of Louisianians who have never moved away. Ever. For generations. That leads to a particularly narrow view of the world, for what it's worth. OTOH, those families have very strong ties. People are friendly, but a bit wary of outsiders.
