Asheville is incredibly overrated

I have lived here since 2004 and watched what was once a nice place go down the proverbial toilet. It has always been over priced and pretentious regarding the cultural offerings however now we have gangs, meth, rape, murder and home invasions along with unemployment and yet people continue to move here? Why? The cost of living is horrendous.

Wow. I really haven't seen much evidence of gangs, but definitely a few meth heads in the thrift stores. When I was on the Facebook group for West Asheville, I did notice that people were posting more frequently about home break-ins and other assorted thefts from cars. It does have a bit of a pretentious feel and the apartment corporations here are charging more and more. The cost of living IS horrendous for what you are getting here.
