re: moving to Houston - 9/2/2011 I will give you a few resident tuition-only comparisons - these are approximations! There are MANY colleges in and around Houston. Rice University has probably the most gorgeous campus in a wealthy neighborhood (and in medical center area) with huge oak trees lining the streets. I would call it the Ivy League school in Houston ($33,000 with 84% receiving financial aid). It is ranked #17 in US News vs So Cal #23 so they are pretty close. The University of Houston is a Tier 1 school and if you want a bargain ($9000 resident)you can't beat it. I would suggest applying for the Honors College for a great experience. They have campuses ALL OVER Houston. It also has a top-ranked law school. There is also Houston Baptist ($23,000), University of St. Thomas ($30,000) and you can't beat it for medical schools (UT MD Anderson & Baylor Med.). Within 1-3 hours of Houston you have another bargain in Sam Houston State ($7000) and of course University of Texas (Austin -$9700) & A&M (if you like a really tradition-bound campus culture)and Baylor (Waco - $29,000). I haven't even begun to list all the colleges (public and private) in the area. Good luck! Many of us love Houston. It takes awhile to find what you like but it's here!
