Very helpful review. Thanks!

Impressed after a visit - 4/21/2016
We visited last month after receiving a job offer. We live in Gainesville Fl now and we love it here, but the job opportunity makes it worthwhile to consider moving. Knoxville struck me as what Gainesville might be like in 30 years: a bigger city with an excellent University and a highly educated, diverse culture. The restaurants were excellent, the people were very welcoming, and the apartments and houses that we checked out were all very reasonably priced. Definitely considering the move!

We too are considering a move to Knoxville, but we're living in Gainesville Florida right now and love it. I was wondering how you felt about Knoxville now, since it's been a few years since your original move. Do you still like it? In our case, we truly love where we live now and would only move due to the job opportunity. It sounds like you did not enjoy where you were originally living. Do you like it in Knox?

Wow. We are considering a move from Gainesville FL to Knoxville TN due to a job offer. I love Gainesville, and we visited Knoxville for a few days last month to see if we think that we could make the move and be happy. I loved it. In fact, Knoxville reminded me of a bigger Gainesville. The restaurants were amazing, I loved how clean the downtown area was, and the people all seemed genuinely welcoming. I'm surprised to read about the crime that people are talking about here, especially on the west side of town. I thought that area was very upscale? Do you still feel that way? Would you discourage people from moving?

Agree about the NW side of Gainesville. It's a great place to live.

Agree! Gainesville is a great place to live and work. I haven't lived in NH, but I've lived in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Gainesville beats those cities hands down.

Some of the negative reviews of Gainesville on here surprise me.

Gainesville FL - great weather and great people - 4/20/2016
Gainesville has mostly sunny days. When it rains, it does so with enough gusto to quickly water the grass and plants, and then it's back to sunny skies a few hours later. We have a lot of lush trees, thanks to a well educated city arborist, and when you drive through town, you're sure to notice that the apartments and houses have meticulous landscaping that looks lush.

There are a lot of great public pools and water features, so that you can enjoy the sun around your neighbors. There are also great jogging and biking trails (I like the Gainesville Hawthorne trail myself) that were converted from the original railroad lines that ran through the city many years ago.

The weather here is great. Fairly warm in the summer, but with a nice breeze that makes it livable even on the hot days. I truly love it here.

Gainesville apartments are plentiful and inexpensi - 4/20/2016
I'm amazed at how inexpensive the housing in Gainesville remains in 2016. With a high population of renters, the apartments in Gainesville are in demand, but there are a lot of apartment complexes that cater to many different types of people. There are student apartments around the University (better if you can stand late night parties) and lots of great, affordable apartments for grad students or working professionals, too. The downtown has a festive atmosphere on the weekends, and there are apartments above Union Street that you can rent or buy now.

Decent houses can be purchased in the high 100s, and depending on where you work in town, you could ride your bike to work.

The weather here is great, with enough rain to keep the landscaping lush, but mostly sunny days. It's a great place to live!

Gainesville FL is a great city for young professio - 4/20/2016
I lived in and around Gainesville Florida growing up, attending the University of Florida as a college student, and then moved out of state when I graduated. After living in Dallas, TX and Austin, TX and traveling a lot for work, I can confidently say that Gainesville FL is truly a great place to live as a young professional or a person with a family. As a college student, I often felt like the city lacked a lot of the amenities in a big city like Chicago or New York, but I can now see that it also lacks many of the problems in those big cities (like high crime, high costs of living, high taxes, and high unemployment).

Gainesville has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation. It's a great place for a working professional to find a job, and the companies truly want to keep their employees, because it can be a challenge for them to recruit replacements due to the low unemployment. There are great restaurants, wonderful playhouses, great music shows within 2 hours, convenient airports, and there's an excellent school system with some of the top IB programs in the nation. There's no state income tax, and the people in Gainesville have a high amount of education. There's very low crime, and the cost of living is crazy low. The houses and apartments for rent in Gainesville have a lot of variety (you can rent in college student areas, areas with more professors, areas like the Duckpond with historic houses, or you can live in a large apartment complex like those in big cities). The traffic is perhaps the only challenge for me, and even that is far better than you'd find in larger cities in the state like Jacksonville, Tampa, or Orlando.

All in all, an excellent place to live with beautiful weather, a low cost of living, and very low crime. I love it here.

re: Gainesville is not such a great place to live.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been unhappy in Gainesville, Amie. You only published this review in 2015, but there are a lot of different sections in town that you should check out if you are still in town. The Duckpond area has a lot of very affordable apartments and housing for rent, and it's on the bus routes (and you can walk to downtown restaurants). You didn't mention what you do for a living, but the startup culture in downtown Gainesville and Innovation Square might really suit you! Give it a try! There are lots of great meet ups and great people. Good luck!
