Leland, NC

New to Leland - 2/12/2008
We've been in Leland for almost 2 months now. We really like it here. We transplanted from Brevard County Florida, and we used to commute for everything at least 30 minutes! Leland is pretty nice. We are in a pretty nice area, and the hustle of Wilmington is just across the river. It is so nice to have everything so close by, within a 15 min drive. It's been 10 years of commuting, and now I feel that I never want to go back to that!
Traffic is a little iffy, at the usual am/pm rush hours. One thing we have noticed, is that smoking is still allowed here in restaurants. There has been a no-smoking ban in Florida for a few years, and for those of us who don't smoke, it was nice.
The High School here seems to be great. Daughter in 12th grade. People here are VERY friendly! Down in FL, it was far and few between to find someone who would smile, or wave to you as you drove by. Manners are a lost breed down there, but it's nice to see that it still exists here!
We also noticed that we are used to the fast pace of things in FL. In the restaurants, you would get your order within minutes of placing it. We've had to try to slow down our pace in Leland, as it takes at least 15-20 min before your food arrives. We will adjust!
We are very happy to have relocated to Leland NC! Haven't seen anything crime related yet.

Mims, FL

diverse areas - 2/12/2008
I lived in Mims for 4 years. It takes getting used to. I loved the fact that there wasn't much for traffic, compared to Central Fl. My teenage daughter learned to drive while living in Mims, which worked out well for her.

There are different types of residential areas: the expensive homes, the "red-neck-don't care about the junk cars in the yard" homes, and the mobile homes. The mediocre level homes, which there are alot of, could be relatively nice but then you got Billy-Jo-Bob living on either side of you that don't care that their dirty/cluttered yards make yours look bad.

There is only one movie theater in Mims/Titusville area, and it's not the greatest. Old and run down. You have to drive into Merritt Island or Melbourne for a decent theater. Restaurants aren't that great. The only place Mims has a name from is "Dixie-Crossroads" Seafood, which does have great food.
The two small shopping malls in Titusville are still trying to re-open with all the stores leased. Last I was there, only 1/4 of the stores were open.

If you have a pond or lake near by your home, you will have constant mosquito
problems. The entire year round!

One nice aspect of the area, is watching the Shuttle take off right from your back yard! Can't beat that!

Overall, the 4 years we were there was adequate. "red-neck" neighbors and nothing to do in the area were our only complaints.

Mims, FL

where to work?
- 5/31/2007
Mims is a relatively small town, attached to Titusville FL. The small town is nice if you want to get away from the hustle of Central Florida, but there isn't too much available here for work. Most people have to commute to either Orlando, Melbourne, or Daytona Beach. If you are lucky enough to find a job in Mims, it will most likely be a minimum wage paying job.
