Pine Ridge, SD
Crime and poverty stats are incorrect -
4/28/2007Since the only police force on the Pine Ridge Reservation is the tribal police, most crime is not reported outside the tribe. Rampant crime, expecially drug manufacture and sale. Check the federal court reports for major crimes committed by Pine Ridge residents. No state or county courts have jurisdiction. Massive amounts of taxpayer money have done nothing to raise the standard of living.
Three Forks, MT
Emphasis on athletics, not learning -
4/28/2007I spent 12 long years in the Three Forks school system. Then spent 2 years taking remedial classes to get an education.

4/27/2007I was born in Three Forks and lived there for a total of 25 years. Left forever in 1988 and never looked back. Two major employers, a talc mill and a cement plant. Cost of living is high due to influx of people from Bozeman where the costs are out of sight. Good fishing. Very poor school. Lots of drugs. Law enforcement is a joke.
Butte-Silver Bow, MT
Not a pretty town, but a good place to live. -
4/27/2007I lived in Butte for eight years, from 1974 to 1982. That was the final chapter in the life of the mining industry in Butte. Economy is slow and jobs hard to find, but cost of living is low. No sales tax in Montana. Great engineering college in town but public schools are below average. Private schools in the area are better.

4/27/2007I lived in Challis from 1988 to 1992. At that time there was no bookstore in town. One employer, a molybdenum mine. Population consists of two groups, the mine workers who leave when the mine shuts down (which it does on a regular basis), and the very clannish local farming/ranching community.
Challis is the county seat and did not have electricity until 1971.
On the bright side, there is very little crime.
Rapid City, SD
Nice place to live if you have a good job -
4/27/2007If you don't make at least $40,000 a year, you don't want to live here. Most jobs in town pay less than $9.00 an hour. Food costs are high, public transportation is minimal, car insurance is expensive due to poor drivers and high percentage of uninsured drivers.
