Flagstaff, AZ

"Employers would rather hire two students at very low wages than one experienced, quality person." Were you really expecting different from a college town? I'm from Washington state and have lived in Olympia for much of it. I have several friends in AZ who tell me Flagstaff is Arizona's Olympia. Hard to leave for the atmosphere but almost impossible to find work in.And that is because Olympia has 3 major colleges and only one small mall. I would never move to Olympia assuming I'd be able to find work if I just networked well enough and not be able to financially support myself for at least six months first. That's just naive. I don't think Flagstaff would be any different for the same principals.

"If you are a liberal, homosexual, or transgender person, then you would probably love this town." Wow what a statement! You just sold me on Ann Arbor! Because if closed minded bigoted homophobic idiots like you are turned off by it so extremely it's the perfect place for me!

Mount Vernon, WA

I don't know about everybody else but the opinion of this clear racist means very little to me!

That seems awfully selfish.

Vancouver, WA

re: VANTUCKY! - 2/17/2010

I've lived in Vancouver on and off since I was 7 years old. This is a bit of a limited review but I cannot say it's entirely untrue. Vantucky or "The Couv" as locals call it is very much the conservative red-neck area of the pacific northwest. People there ARE more closed minded politically and in terms of minorities and homosexuality, etc than any other part of WA or OR I have lived in. Downtown is GROSS, flat out gross! It might be a decent place to live in if you are a senior citizen as it has some very nice retirement homes (I was a CNA in Vancouver for 3 years and can contest to that), however... if you have a family, it may not be the ideal place to live. The schools are either bad or okay in the Vancouver area (though some surrounding/more "out there" schools like in Washougal can be very good) but none of them are great. There are very few parks. A lot of the people are ill educated and rude. All in all, it's not quite a 'blight' on the pacific northwest but it is far and away from the best city one could choose either.

Salem, OR

This is the best and most fair-handed review I have read of Salem on this whole thread. I cannot believe the woman below who lived there from 85-87 and is making judgments about it now! A lot of things change in three decades. I will definitely consider Salem for my pacific northwest relocation.
