Buffalo, NY

Winters are too brutal - 4/19/2013
Winters in Buffalo are the worst. Many grey, overcast days and you often don't get to see the sun for a few days at a time. It is bitterly cold and it is not uncommon to have daily highs in the teens and overnight lows in the single digits. The snow is exasperating. If 4 feet of snow falls in a 24 hr period, oh well, just another work/school day. A snow blower is a necessity around here. Summers though are gorgeous even though they can be hot and sticky (humid). You will need a/c, or at least a fan, or you will be too uncomfortable to sleep at night.

Seattle, WA

Beautiful but... - 10/11/2010
There is more than meets the eye when it comes to Seattle. Visitors will no doubt be charmed by the mountain and Puget sound views. But after living here certain things begin to wear on you. Traffic. Mind-numbing excessive traffic. The weather and what feels like never ending gray overcast days at times. And when it rains, it likes to do so all day long. But the most prevalent problem is the overcrowding, and this keeps property prices very high. Also because of the economy, many employers are freezing wages, and wages in general just aren't enough to cover what is asked for houses around here, therefore there is a very large contingent of people who rent. Seattle natives are passive-aggressive, which isn't a flaw I'm just telling it like it is. Also if you come from an area where you say hi to people when you walk by them, that dies when you get to Seattle.

Fabien you hit the nail on the head about Seattle.

Rochester, NY

It used to be something - 3/23/2010
...back in the 1970's when Kodak employed the masses. This is officially a dead city, mainly supported by a grocery chain (Wegmans, that employs mostly part time workers and pays them crap wages), local private colleges, hospitals, call centers, and basically things that have no export value to produce real money and raise the regional GDP. The property taxes in New York State are very high and make property ownership a losing endeavor. Also there is a 7% income tax in the highest bracket (anything over $20k) and 8.25% sales tax. Unable to vote out the encrusted, tax and spend Democratic incumbents, people have been leaving this area in droves for decades. Those who stay however enjoy relatively short commute times and low housing prices. You may be able to afford the house, but you might not be able to pay the taxes! Also the weather in Rochester is unbearably cold and atrocious for much of the year, save for June, July, August and September.

High Sales tax - 12/10/2007
Erie county sales tax is 9% not the 8.25% listed on Sperling's BestPlaces.
