Beaumont, TX

Setting the record straight about Beaumont. - 8/26/2010
Let's start off with the attitude of Beaumont citizens, some of you say that people in Beaumont are rude and cliquish unless you are a doctor or a lawyer. I have lived in Beaumont my whole life and have meet a lot of really nice people, does Beaumont have some rude, snobbish, stuck up people yea but doesn't every city. I would have to say that the majority of Beaumont are really nice so I wouldn't judge awhole city by a few bad eggs.

Josh said "Beaumont is terrible, period. within a 40 mile radius there are 4 huge oil refineries and literally dozens of petrochemical plants." Lets get this straight there is only one refinery in the Beaumont city limits and it is in the south end of town. There is really no reason to be in the south end because there isn't much down there unless you live there or work there. There is the Good Year plant and a paint plant on the outskirts of the city, all the other refineries and petrochemical plants are in Port Arthur and there really is no reason to goto Port Arthur.

Marthile said that the air in Beaumont is toxic, I have been to a bunch of cities like Houston, Austin, Dallas, Galveston, etc and the air smells no different here then anywhere else.

Josh called the citizens of Beaumont rednecks, this is a urban area last time I checked rednecks lived in rural areas like Sour Lake.

Marthile also said "you cannot make any money here, the cliquish people here will not allow it." I don't see how these so called cliquish people are stopping you from making money, it is hard for anyone to make money in this economy right now. There are non wealthy people making money in Beaumont. If you are qualified for a good paying job nobody but yourself is stopping you.

Now lets address the beach. "The beaches are covered with trash." I don't know if you people have ever looked at a map of Texas but the beach is not part of Beaumont. It is not the responsiblity of Beaumont to keep the beaches clean (This is the dumbest complaint I have ever heard.) Even at that you talk about the beach like it is covered in trash, no it's not Cancun but it's not as bad as you make it out to be. Then you talk about the water being brown, when did the citizens of Beaumont decide to turn the water brown, it's been that way for as long as I can remember.

"The roads here have not been repaired, unless you are a doctor or a lawyer."
Now this is something that I can somewhat agree with you. Beaumont does have some roads that need to be repaired, but what does being a doctor or a lawyer have to with repairing a road.

Marthile said that "The University is a joke" Washington Post Writers Group gave Lamar University an (A) for biggest bang for your buck. The enrollment increases every year, the engineering department is one of the top in the state of Texas please tell me how this University is a joke.

"Oh yea, being close to the coast they do not even support the seafood industry. There is only 2 seafood resturants in the area and one is a resturant chain." There is Red Lobster, Pappadeaux, Baytown Seafood, Catfish Kitchen, Joes Crab Shack, Floyd's Seafood, Sartin's Seafood, etc. We are a mid size city, not a major city there is no reason for us to have 20 seafood resturants.

Marthile said "Their mall is a joke also, the clothing they sell looks like someone trying to work the streets." There is Dillard's, Sears, Old Navy, American Eagle, Macy's, Hollister, Abacrombie & Fitch, Wet Seal, Butch Hoffer, and many more nice clothing and shoe stores in Parkdale Mall. I don't see where you get off saying that all the clothing stores at the mall are trash. I don't think that the quality of these products are any different then the prducts in the same stores in a different city.

Marthile also says "everytime is rains it floods the streets, why because the local government will not do anything about the canals that stay completely full all the time." This is a complaint that I don't understand, you make it sound like whenever it rains everyone in Beaumont is in danger of having there homes flooded. Even after hurricane Rita there wasn't any massive amount of flood damage in the Beaumont area. So how are you going to say there is a flood problem when we have been through a hurricane and it wasn't a problem.

Now the weather "The heat is terrible and the electricity bill are out of this world with the humidity at a 100%." This comment would makes me think you haven't lived in Texas your whole life. This is Texas yea it gets HOT in the summer, we are not the only place in the world that is hot and humid. As long as your house is properly instalated and your windows are sealed good your electric bill will not break the bank.

So in conclusion I would say Beaumont is a great place to call home, it is a city that is not to big but not to small. There is plenty of things to do like shopping, going to a nice resturant, taking the boat or jet ski's out on the Neches for a day of family fun, or recreational sports and plenty more. What you can't do i'm sure you will find it an hour down I-10 in Houston or maybe staying in a nice hotel 45 minutes away on the sea wall in Galveston.
