3/10/2016You are so right, have been in the area since 1997 and the good vibes are long gone. The drivers are all about me types, disgusting. The 2nd building boom is currently on, the last one ended in the great recession, this one looks similar but we shall see. The beaches are a hassle to get to now, finding parking on Siesta is a joke, St. Armands and Lido require early arrival before 11 am on weekends if you don't want to stew in traffic. It's a great town if you can live on Casey Key or other wealthy enclaves. Otherwise look for places not discovered, like perhaps El Jobean or places east of Arcadia.

3/10/2016Yes there is a lot of rudeness in Sarasota. It is haves and have nots. Don't see the military problem you mention though. With all the street hustle, who would notice that. I think the not nice thing is because for some weird reason, people that move to Florida are not interested in making friends unless you belong to the same club-that way they know you are separate from the great unwashed, and will "invest" in playing the game with you to a point. The real relationships seem to be where they are from, not where they are. Everything is handled fast in the day to day, not much graciousness. It's a money town. If you come, have the folks that matter, with you.

3/10/2016I hear you, Sarasota is often unfriendly and mean. People are just rude and clicky. Hard to make friends because the locals are jaded regards newcomers since they come for the weather or won't be around long regardless. I see it as a giant medical clinic. I lived in the SF Bay area-totally different vibe although who can afford it. Don't get me started on the drivers. Worst in the country.
