Stay away unless you can provide your teenaged daughter around-the-clock protection. There are far too many sex-offenders here and others just looking for someone they can get to "work" for them, if you know what I mean.

To a point, I tend to agree. I am a middle-aged black woman who wanted to move here since the early 1970's. When I finally made the move in 2004, I was thrilled, but the excitement was short-lived.
I've only lived one other place in my life, but I've never been subjected to such blatent racism as I have living here. People feel they can speak to you any way they choose. After being in the workforce on & off for 40 years, I was let go from a job with no advance warning. Since it took 13 months just to get hired for a part-time job, I'm fortunate I own my home or I'd be in the street. These "right-to-work" states have no protection for workers. I disagree about housing. If you have no yard, it's because you choose to live in a new home rather than older, established neighborhoods. I have plenty of lot at my 1965 house!

Single family home takes on a new meaning in NYC
- 2/3/2007
I can't imagine how people can consider themselves happy to live in an overcrowded, overinflated city like NY where 2/3 of the population are renters and renters of apartments to boot. Single family home to these people mean living in an apartment that's not shared with friends or other family just to be able to make the rent payment. I don't care how many cultural amenities are available if you have to pay premium money just to live in a cracker box where you have to worry about whether your neighbors are going to do something careless that will cause your building to burn down overnight.

People in NY would turn up their noses at salaries in many other states, but what they don't realize is that the lower salaries balance out with the also lower cost of living.

There's no way I could live in a place like that-ever-and nothing can convince me otherwise. You can have it!

Nobody has bothered to mention the DROUGHT !!

While doing recent research on this area, I find that water restrictions have come into play. I currently live in the desert (Las Vegas) and live under these same restrictions. You can only water your lawn, etc. on specified assigned days, car washing is at a minimum if allowed at all, and the water usage is tiered so that you pay a premium for this now liquid gold. Being in the desert and owning a swimming pool means my water bills rival my other utility costs. I am looking for somewhere else to live, but unfortunately, I've had to cross Dallas off of my list.

IF YOU DON'T SEE GREENERY, YOU'RE IN THE WRONG PAR
- 9/23/2006
I relocated to Las Vegas in 2004 after more than 50 years in Oakland, CA.
Although many people like that "new home smell", for me, the only thing that matters is how well built the home is and will it stand the test of time.

The problem here is they're building faster than the public utilities can keep up with the growth. Because of this, you're likely to find widespread flooding in many of the newly-built areas of town during the monsoon season because the storm drains can't handle the flash flood waters.

I chose an older home in a well-established neighborhood. My home is 41 years old (built in 1965) sits on 1/5 acre of land, has a lush green lawn and mature trees, bushes, and other greenery in both front and back yards.
It also boasts a large swimming pool with diving board and water depth goes up to 8 1/2 feet. Newer homes are not allowed to have pools that deep, nor are they allowed to have diving boards.

True, I don't live in a "gated community", but that lifestyle is not for me, anyway. I don't care for homes that sit 6 inches apart, are all the same color outside, and have about 4 feet of backyard space. I also don't suffer with homeowners' association fee payments just so they can tell me how many micro-inches tall my lawn can be, what type of plants I can grow, or what color I can paint my home's exterior. And they charge monthly fees for the priviledge of stifling people's creativity!! If I'd wanted that, I'd have moved into an apartment.

A gated community is nothing but a false sense of security for many people, but they're no safer than anywhere else from what I've seen here. In spite of the so-called security guards, major crimes still occur, including murders by outsiders.

If you want to see greenery, forget the ticky-tacky all-the-same-color little boxes and find yourself a nice older home in an established neighborhood. If my house has stood 41 years without ever having flooded, I expect it will be here for some time to come.
