I wager that those who gave a thumbs down on this comment don't even know what an Alpha Global City is, let alone that Metropolitan Chicago ranks as an Alpha Global City. This basically means Chicago is one of the world's top, most important cities in the global economic system.
Metro Chicago is not only a global city it is an Alpha Global City, Chicago is ranked among the world's top-ten cities on each of five recently and seperately prepared rankings of the world's cities. Each of the five rankings of the worlds top cities employs somewhat different criteria/metrics to determine their rankings. Chicago is a world class city and of course there are socio-economic issues to be resolved as with any city the size of Chicago.
One very positive factor for Chicago was a recent ranking which placed Chicago's freight and passenger rail system at number two in the world. The city's three commuter rail services, Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and South Shore Line comprise 700 miles of route, almost all of the 700 miles being two-way, double-track. This is an asset of incalculable value. Chicago was hard hit by the financial crisis and Great Recession, however, all of Chicago's downtown census tracts are experiencing healthy population growth. Chicago's transformation to an even greater Megacity continues from it's iconic downtown outward. Also let's not forget that Chicago has a dazzling location on the shore of an inland sea, Lake Michigan/Lake Huron, which is in surface area is the largest body of fresh water in the world.

8/27/2012Please just leave instead of exposing all the rest of us to your unfortunate situation and whinning rants. I can't relate to you because for me Chicago has been a great experience. Chicago does get a real winter, but north of Chicago is even colder. Chicago does get a real summer, but south of Chicago is even hotter and more humid.

12/22/2010Actually, Chicago does have a real winter, about Thanksgiving to April 1st, but if you are in the city as opposed to the suburbs and especially the outlying suburbs, the winters are not too bad for most people to handle. May thru Oct is nice and June thru Sept. in Chicago an amazing kaleidoscopic season of fairs, festivals and other outdoor activities.

12/8/2010I am very familiar with the City of Chicago and this review is a political rant and a political diatribe to the point of being absurd. This review has to have been written by a angry, unhappy and hapless sad sack...this piece is absurd malarkey! It is a shame that someone can come on this website and have a review containing so much misinformation, disinformation and false information be published.

12/8/2010I do not understand what motivates these people to become so overwrought and melodramatic about The City of Chicago. Actually I have heard it all before and I think some of it at least politically motivated. Chicago is a huge city which covers about 235 square mile and has a population of almost 3 million. There are over 200 neighborhoods in the city which make up Chicago's 77 community areas. About 17 to 20 of these 77 areas have high rates of crime a few have very high rates of crime. There are however plenty of save areas in the Chicago. I have been familiar with the city for decades going back to the late sixties One needs this decades long perspective to make a valid judgement as to where the city is making progress or is not making progress toward becoming a better city. And can I tell you with certainty that the Chicago of today is a much improved city when compared with the Chicago of the past. In fact the United States Department of Justice keeps long term statistics on the crime rates of United States cities, so we do have to guess as to whether the crime rate is going up of coming down. For instance, we can look at the data and see that the violent crime rate in Chicago is one half of what it was 15 or 20 years ago. I can not think of a single occasion, that I have had to alter my plans because of the potential of a crime occurring. I have been to most of the biggest cities in the United States and I can say that Chicago compares favorable with all of them. In fact Chicago is a Global Class City of which the United states has three, LA, NYC & CHGO. Come to Chicago and see the city for yourself.

12/8/2010This is an absurd political rant and diatribe. This guy sounds angry and unhappy and I do not think Chicago caused the problem. I don't know anyone who is as seemingly hapless as this individual.
