Tooch: If you REALLY think that "it's hard for a 40 year old guy to meet a high quality woman" in San Diego, you've probably already ruled out U.S. Military women! San Diego has a HUGE military population, including a lot of 40-ish single women -- many of them never-married officers and senior NCOs -- who are choosing to remain here when they "retire" (after 20 years' service) and are receiving monthly pension payments equal to half their active-duty service salaries. Military and ex-military women are task-oriented (read as: SO not "high-maintenance"!), are often extremely well-educated (commissioned officers have AT LEAST a B.A. or B.S. degree, and many senior non-commissioned officers have earned a B.S. or B.A. while serving as well as a truckload of advanced vocational and management training), are respectful of legitimate authority, have conservative family values at a much higher rate than the civilian population, and in many cases are eager beyond belief to "settle down" to the white picket fence and a couple of kids (step- or adoptive- are FINE!). If those qualities do not indicate to you a "quality woman" to you, I don't know what does!

Of course, Tooch, if you at 40-ish think a "quality woman" is a 20-something binge-drinking party girl dressed like Jersey Shore, you're right: you CAN'T compete with vacationing frat boys who stagger around puking into the gutters of the Gaslamp District (believe me, I see this all the time -- I LIVE in the heart of the Gaslamp). But why would you WANT to compete against drunken frat boys for 20-something party girls? If you're serious about wanting a "quality woman," please give San Diego another look -- with military women specifically in mind!

I am a New York/New Jersey grrrl not in San Diego by choice. I am here only because the military posted my husband here. In fact, back in my East Coast corporate life, I used to travel to SoCal frequently on business, and swore on my father's grave I would NEVER live here! Surprise, surprise; I LIKE San Diego. Which is a good thing, because this is the first Big City my husband the small-town Midwest boy has totally fallen in love with...to the point where we're already developing a business plan to stay here when he retires from his 20. OF COURSE I'd prefer to retire and start up my next successful business back in the Princeton NJ area, but as retirement destinations go I'd FAR rather be HERE than in some godforsaken hamlet in Ohio! (Eh. Who knew? ;))
