Reno, NV

Question: what's it like?
- 9/9/2006
I am looking to move to Reno as a renter. I see that house prices are going way up, but rents still seem pretty reasonable from what I can tell on the internet. How is the city to live in day-to-day? Are the people friendly? Is the traffic well-mannered? Are there safety concerns? Is the job market expanding like they say? Is it pretty despite having little green?

Tucson, AZ

Gorgeous nature, rough edges
- 9/8/2006
Tucson is physically magnificent. The desert gets just enough water to create fascinating plants like saguaro and palo verde, with beautiful blooms in the spring. Sharply rising mountains all around. The most magnificent sunsets you will see anywhere and I've lived all over the USA. Fascinating plant and animal life...watch out for those javelinas!

My trouble with the place is the city itself which I do not recommend as much. There's a lot of severe poverty and people living on the edge, which makes the city less safe and also very sad at times. There a good aspects too, but the coarse and desperate side was very hard for me to ignore. If you are considering moving here and crime is a concern to you, please don't just go by the statistics spend some time here to see if you are comfortable.

Some good things though - the Tucson Botanical Gardens for plants and the Sonoran Desert Museum for plants and animals. The Flandrau planetarium is wonderful and has excellent shows. There is a fascinating mix of people of all political persuasions and it's quite a religious town, all varieties. Almost forgot the best coffee house around Sunrise Coffee House. Wonderful coffee and authentic Kurdish food.
