Flagstaff, AZ

Flagstaff Pluses and Minuses - 5/6/2008
Prior to choosing Flagstaff 13 years ago I heard the oft mentioned description "poverty with a view" This is true for some but not for others. Look carefully at the job market for your own field. If you have a job Flagstaff can provide great quality of life. Outdoor recreation and beauty is endless. There is lots of culture for a small town- theatre, music, and many other things you'd expect from a university community. It is very much a live and let live place with lots of diversity. It is an open-minded island in a state that is largely very conservative. IMO weather is nearly perfect. Four seasons but none extreme. Very dry so if you like humidity you won't like Flagstaff. Virtually no mosquitos, fleas, or ticks. Very health conscious mind-set (non smoking active folks) Traffic is minimal- if you're from a big city you'd laugh at what we call rush hour (more like rush half hour and limited to only a few roads.) There's a small airport and it doesn't cost much more to fly from Flag than from Phoenix and much less hassle and time. Very charming downtown with lots of great restaurants, art galleries, and independent shops. Yes we still have big name stores and shopping mall for those who prefer that. There are downsides to every community and Flagstaff is not perfect but nearly so.
