Baton Rouge, LA

The city itself has pretty much been in the 200 thousand plus area since 1970. The crime rate in the last ten years has either been steady or dropping. Most of the Katrina victims are gone so let's get passed that. The economy is doing great and housing is still affordable. Depends on what area you live in will determine how good the public schools are but the private ones are excellent and LSU and Southern are top notch! The Community College is also one of the best in the nation.

Marietta, GA

Marietta - 6/18/2009
Ilived in the city for three years was really nice when I first moved there since then the city has grown and continues to grow. Being a suburb of Atlanta most people commute and traffic is just horrible seeing it's 20 minutes from any major highway(75 or 20). The public school system is a little behind. While housing is not that expensive property taxes are a nail bitter. The city is still having difficulty with race relations but seems to finally be on the right track. Downtown is very nice and has a southern charm ofcourse with plenty of things to do. So many parks and nature trails to choose from.Public transportation is not that good and does not runon sundays so you will need a car. Plenty of restaurants and little shops. The closes mall is in Kenessaw which is a 15 minute drive. I would encourage you visit first and then decide on moving.

Manitowoc, WI

Interesting town - 6/17/2009
Last year my wife and went to Manitowoc she grew upin this town. The lake was amazing and the town was just the way she said it was except for the mall and a couple of new individual stores opening. I would go back and visit again but would not consider moving up there.

Cheyenne, WY

Cheyenne? - 6/17/2009
I was in Cheyenne about 7 years ago and enjoyed my brief stay there. My wife and I will be relocating next year from Arizona and are looking at this city.We are looking for a city that is small, family oriented and is accepting of outsiders.LikeI said before from what we saw then it seemed really nice but a brief stay does not qualify as being able to judge a city.

Ashland, KY

re: Was Claudius talking about a different place?
- 6/17/2009
I went to Verity Middle School and PaulG.Blazer High school. My father was a doctor at KDMC for 11 years before leaving we lived on Lexington ave., across from central park and crab elementary. They had Ashland oil which moved to findlay, Ohio and Armco steel which closed down. Ashland town center is not a mid sized mall and neither is the one in summitt. The high school used to be a good campus but needs some major work. The YMCA in Huntington, WV is a whole lot better and that is not saying much. Yes they have opened up a couple of restaurants(applebees and golden corral)and that is suppose to make Ashland this what? When I first moved there in 1989 the population was 28,000 and now it's barely 19,000. The only thing that keeps the town and it's residents going is KDMC and for us who do not want that it was get out of town. Their is not even a four year University of high school graduates to go to, you have to either go to Marshall in Huntington, WV, Moorehead St., UK or another school. I was recently back in the city to visit and I was so ready to leave in less than an hour! Unless your a doctor you willnot make a good living in Ashland and that was not always that way but likeI said the plants are gone. I left in 2000 and have no plans to ever move back or raise my children there. Like most of Kentucky except for Louisville and Lexington the cities in Kentucky are living in the past and needs plenty of help with the infrastructure. It could have been something wonderful but the local government and those to stubborn to change are the ones to blame.

Baton Rouge, LA

The New Southern Cosmo - 6/10/2009
Baton Rouge is finally blossoming into a cosmopolitian city. Downtown which was abandoned back in the day is alive and well. It used to strive on LSU, now it's holding it's own and surpassing New Orleans. The weather is very hot and humid in summer through mid fall but the winter and spring are nice and mild. Plenty of places to eat, shop and rest. The crime rate is going down and that is a good thing. While other parts of the coutnry have experienced a depression Baton Rouge is doing well on the economic front.

Ashland, KY

re: A town in ruins - 12/3/2008

Armco is gone and Ashland Oil is of the past. KDMC is the only thing holding the town as most of my friends work there. The population is down to 19000 when I first moved there it was 28000. The unemployment rate is down to 9%, you just cannot find a good job unless you want to work at the hospital. The public school system is below standards and the communty college which was once a branch of UK has gone backwards. The upside it's a place you can stil raise kids despite the rise in drugs.

Phoenix, AZ

Pluses and Minuses - 6/10/2009
I moved here four months ago and this city and state has it's pluses and minuses. The view is amazing, so many things to do, public transportation is amazing, cost of living is very cheap and the crime is low. Being only two and a half hours from mexico it does not feel like you are in america. The weather was good the first couple of months but has turned extremely hot and while their is no humidity hot is hot. The housing market and economy badly damaged and from the conservative leadership they refuse to take the bailout money to restore the economy as a result the deficit is over 6 billion dollars and eventually they will raise taxes!! At this time I would not recommend anyone moving here until the economy stablizes and if your not into heat it will not be for you or if,you are big on the american way!

Ashland, KY

A town in ruins - 12/3/2008
I went to junior high and high school here and I can tell you if, you were not born here you will never fit in. The town used to be something but when the oil company left and the steel mill went down so did the population. Crime has gone up and poverty is out of control.

Lexington, KY

Kentucky's favorite city - 12/3/2008
Lexington is a very pleasant town with a southern country charm. Plenty of restaurants, wonderful mall, the best college in america, low crime, affordable housing and the place where you can raise a family.
