Seal Beach, CA

My grandparents paid less than $50,000 for a Seal
- 10/12/2006
My dad and uncle were born and raised in Seal Beach; my grandparents bought their family home back in 1963 (when my dad was 12) for about $50K. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, garage, yard, family room, in a nice quiet neighborhood. Although the home lacked an ocean view, a 10 minute walk was all it took to step into the ocean. My grandparents lived in that home throughout my childhood; I remember the big party they threw in 1983, when I was 10 years old, after they made their final house payment! That home was finally paid for; I remember my grandmother telling me that their mortgage payment was $66 a month! Considering the fact I knew my parents were paying about $550 a month at that time for the dump we lived in outside of San Bernardino, I was amazed! At that time, my uncle and his girlfriend were renting a small apartment in Seal Beach for $650 a month, and that was a "bargain", even for 1983! My grandparents sold that same house when I was 16; this was 1989, and they got (GET THIS!) over half a million dollars for it! My grandmother said back then that the place was turning into a haven for Yuppies; the only thing saving the neighborhood from being demolished to make way for condos was the lack of view! The last time I drove by the childhood home of my father, I noticed that the house and the street it occupied didn't look much different than it did when my family left it, but the town itself was another world! The Glider Inn Restaurant, local tradition and personal family favorite, was long gone, as well as other elements that made Seal Beach unique. My grandmother refuses to return; tears come to her eyes when she hears of what time and greed have done to the place. Family member often wonder what the FMV price would be for that house today; this website states that the median home price is $862,500. If a home sold in 1989 for almost 500,000, what would it sell for today? I'm sure it could list in the high $800's; a million if it had the view! And people will pay for it! I would, if it were possible! Being that close to Long Beach with such a low crime rate is reason enough to live there.

My mother lived in this town for years, and I decided to try it out. My" try" lasted a whole 4 months! There's got to be something in the water in this town! People are so bad! Teen pregnancy runs rampid, drug use is huge, and the traffic is hell (especially during winter months while the "snowbirds" are visiting. Did I forget the summer weather? 120F easy every day for months; you have no reason to leave your a/c during the day. It's miserable! Decent health care? HAHA! Wanna find it? Take a 100 mile or so roadtrip to Las Vegas! My brother was in an accident on his motorcycle there, and they had to airlift him to Vegas! My mother had some medical issues that stumped the medical community of BHC and she FINALLY got a Vegas doctor to diagnose and treat. Amazing! I think maybe the heat fries people's brains here. If you want to move here, DON'T! If you do, stay away from the natives!

This has got to be one of the only places I've ever visited/lived that had NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AT ALL! Traffic is a nightmare, as these tiny streets can't handle the growth of the area. Thanks to Tyson and Walmart, this area is booming, and the hicks that run the area need to do something about it and not let Walmart pull their strings! Rogers actually has a few sidewalks, but I can't say that about other cities/towns in Benton County. You'd get killed trying to walk or ride a bike on these highways, and there is no kind of bus to speak of. If you are without transportation, I hope for your sake that you live close to wherever you need to go!

- 10/12/2006
Since Mr. Sam Walton (rest in peace old man, you had good intentions) passed away in 1992, his family and those now in power of his empire are greedily destroying what "Daddy Sam" had anticipated. Recently, the powers that be have incorporated policy that people who "want to do business with WalMart must at least hold an office in Bentonville." Guess what? NOW, there's million dollar homes popping up, traffic on these tiny little streets that can't handle it, and the natives are PIZZED OFF! One native in particular, an elderly woman who had lived in the area 50+ years told me that "they're mowing down all this beautiful natural things, like streams and pastures, to put up new yuppie housing!" Employees of "Home office" wear their badges on display more than a police officer would display his/her shield. Walmart has its own bank (ARVEST) and church (Cornerstone I think it was called; it was this HUGE church on the outskirts south of Rogers) among other things. Mr. Sam did this economy a noble thing; unfortunately, those who inherited his empire are greedy and corrupt, and are slowly destroying others, and DON'T CARE!! (my apologies to anyone I may have offended; although I only lived in the area a year, I felt that I was rather entitled to my opinion as to how I saw it there)

Las Vegas, NV

Leaving Las Vegas...Best thing I ever did!
- 10/10/2006
8 years living in Vegas turned me into a feelingless, cold (not hearted, just on the exterior), high strung, stressed out, basket case! I had to move to remember what it was like to be human again and to be treated like one. You can't be nice to the majority of the people in Vegas because they see it as a weakness and will try and take advantage of you before you even know it! Don't get me wrong, there are decent people there, they're just hard to find. After being gone now for 2 years, I am almost back to who I used to be, only stronger and still guarded. Warning to anyone who wants to move there: take a look at life that's not on the Las Vegas Strip! Continue driving on Las Vegas Blvd north of the strip and north of Fremont Experience; go under the 95 freeway towards North Las Vegas. See what kind of people are around; take a left on Foremaster, they call that intersection "Hobo Corner" for a reason. Keep your doors locked and be cautious at all times. If you're near the Las Vegas Hilton, continue south on Swenson (far side of the hotel); take a look at what's around you. THEN, venture down Fremont Street towards the Western Hotel and that area; DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN AROUND THAT? I can give you 10 other areas of exploration, but I won't; start with those! And good luck
