Portland, OR

Portland runs circles aroung LA. if LA is so great, then why have so many moved here from LA? It's like the entire state of California is on fire or something. They have spread like a cancer. Oregon will never be the same thanks to them. Most of the backlash and rude experiences come from transplants that don't appreciate and respect the liberal culture. Many of the transplants are trying to tell Portlanders how to live. If you don't want to live in a culturallt rich city, then I wouldn't move to Portland. We have been trying to get rid of the materialism since it came from the southwest. I was born and raised in Oregon and I've seen Portland really change. Some good and some bad. Oregon boasts as being one of the cleanist cities in the nation, the most pet friendly, one of the healthiest, has the best drivers, courteous people and some of the most educated. The air quality is second to none. California is the polar opposite of everything I just mentioned. Have you breathed the air in LA? That's because it doesn't exhist. The only people that rip on Portland are the Californians. They are just mad that they can't change it to their liking and thats a really good thing. Portland isn't just one of the best cities in the nation but also on the Planet. Thats just from what I've read. The unemployment is high but that's also due to all of the poeple that keep moving to Portland. There are more out of state plates than Oregon plates. The parks are clean and green. The air is the best and the outdoors are only minutes away. However, I would visit first before making a decision. The liberal culture and higher cost of living may change your mind.

Love Portland - 8/24/2009
The recession has really hit Portland as well as the state hard. Unemployment is high as well as the cost of living. I was born and raised in Salem Oregon. And by the way, I wouldn't live in Salem. Portland was hit hard by all of the transplants from California. The entire state has been hit hard by them. That is one of the main reasons why the cost of living has increased so much. It's funny though since most Californians left their state in order to get away from what they created. However, now they are doing the same to Oregon. Portland has been rated as one of the most culturally divers cities in the nation and hailed as one of the better cities in the world. Not too bad. So that will draw people from all over the world, which will increase the cost of living. It's easy to get in to the city and is one of the best cities to visit. I lived in Phoenix for 8 years and that is one place that lacks all of the above. And it's no wonder everybody is moving out of California. What a horrible place to be. if you're thinking about moving to Portland, you need to know a few things... It's the most liberal city in the Country, it's not really a sports city, it's expensive as compared to the wages, It does snow in the winter and the summers can be hot. There are more brewers per capita than anywhere else. It's also very culturally diverse. However, due to the amount of California transplants it has gotten more materialistic than ever. Sometimes diversity and materialism don't mix well. many of the most diverse neighboorhoods have been inandated with huppies. This has caused some problems and also some backlash. This is why many transplants have found themslves having some rude experiences. There is a famous saying in Portland.. Keep Portland Weird. And they mean it. There are so many theatres and concerts to choose from. You name it, Portland has it. It's really cool. I live in the suburbs but sometimes go to Portland 3 times a week just to enjoy the fun. I try not to have any political views but the true Porltnad culture is liberal. However, many new comers don't always share the same views. Again, this has caused some problems. I think the recession has been a blessing for Portland. It's the transplants that are moving out but the true Portlander's know it's far to good to leave. It's amazing how much growth has been going on in Portland. There have been over 35 high rise condos sprouting up everywhere in the city but I don't know where they work. I know many retirees have moved here since we have the best transportation system on the west coast. Mostly it's the high unemployment and cost of living that really makes Portland less desireable. However, if you love the outdoors and cutltural diversity, Portland is the place to be.
