9/24/2008I lived in Portales while stationed at Cannon. Portales is even more boring than Clovis. It may be safer, but it constantly smells like cow crap or yeast from the ethanol factory or whatever that plant is over by the "hospital". If you're a single guy, Portales is better because of the university, but look out because it has an extremely high STD rate (one of the highest in the country I believe).

9/24/20081. High Crime rate 2. Low cost of living is because the whole place is a dump 3. Affordable before AFSOC moved in. Now it's housing market is over inflated 4. School system is not good. Mediocre at best 5.Physical setting is awful. Nothing to do for miles and barely a hill until you get to the Cap Rock 6. Avoid this place at all costs. Also, it alwayts smells like cow manure.

9/24/2008High crime rates. High use of Meth. I suspect that most of it comes from the lack of entertainment within 100 miles from the city. I spent a year there, and it was one the worst year of my life. The people in the city rely on the military to sustain them financially, which is probably why the politicians were able to con AFSOC into taking over the base. The town is pretty run down, and the real estate between 1st Street and 14th Street is undesirable due to it being run down and crime infested. The summers are really hot and the winters are really cold. The only thing close to good I can say about the place is there's alot of sun.

9/24/2008Nice place to live. Close to the Gulf of Mexico. Only problem is Highway 98. It's way too congested during certain periods.
