How do you define "Quality of Life?" - 8/5/2013
I grew up in Huntsville, left when I was 20 and lived in New York City, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Came back at 35 for family reasons. If you are moving here from some tiny, nowhere town, you may think it's great. If you are used to living in a more liberal city with arts, culture and a diverse population, you will probably hate it. Huntsville is very conservative. You can't throw a stick without hitting a church. It's a dreadful place for gay people or straight singles. Anybody who is single is in for a lonely life here. If you are a conservative, white, christian family person who also happens to be an engineer, congratulations!! This is your paradise. If you are anything else, forget it. I regularly hear racist and sometimes homophobic comments. The old idea of "Southern Hospitality" is also nonsense. People will be very polite to your face and then turn around and gossip like crazy about you, all the while proclaiming to be a christian. Most of the restaurants are chain restaurants. The summers are brutally humid and hot, like sub-Saharran Africa hot. Walking out your front door is literally like stepping into a steam sauna. And they last for about 5 months. Also, not many people know this but due to the fact that so many people fly here for government contract-related business (and those costs are reimbursed), Huntsville has the highest average cost for airline tickets in the country!!!!! So if you like to travel, plan to spend A LOT to fly anywhere! The city is also very spread out. The downtown area is pretty with charming old houses, but it isn't an area where most people actually live. In my opinion, housing costs are quite high for a city of this size in Alabama. Definitely visit several times (and specifically during the summer months) before moving here.

Just to respond--paying 2 months rent down and having several interviews for the same job is common for a big city, as much as that sucks. 1600 for a 3 bedroom is not a lot at all in a big city, either.

I just want to clarify that the n-word was what my neighbor said. I was quoting his words.

What I am saying is that your view will be based on where you have lived before. The church that I grew up in has (today) a separate directory for Latino/Hispanic people and encourages African-American people to attend another church that they have closer to the projects. I have lived in New York, Miami, Seattle, San Francisco, Nashville, Fort Lauderdale and San Diego and people from those cities find such information positively mystifying. Obviously, segregation is not legal, but this is the South and it is still a fact of life here for whatever reasons. Just the other day, my neighbor started talking to me about how n***ers get some money and don't want to work anymore. If you said something like that in other larger cities people would never speak to you again. Yes, there is A LOT of racism in the South. Huntsville would be considered diverse by a person who is moving here from an even smaller town in the South or mid-west. Also, when speaking about diversity I am speaking of gay and lesbian people, as well.

Diversity. - 4/23/2008
Someone on here said Huntsville is extremely diverse. Compared to what? I guess if you consider Baptists, Methodists and Episcopalians diverse. This is a segregated town that is for families. Straight, white, protestant families. Snore. If you are anything else, might want to look elsewhere.

re: here come barbie and ken on their mountain bik

Hey; Some of these reviews are really starting to scare me. I was thinking of relocating to Denver or Boulder because I love the mountains, desert landscape, hiking and skiing. Also I heard that Boulder was liberal and Denver as well. But now I'm hearing about fake liberals, hicks, rednecks, gangs, conservatives, etc. I am a gay agnostic man and have ZERO interest in religion, conservativism or anything revolving around drunken, football-talking, hyped-up testosterone ravaged straight men. DO I sound like a bad match for Colorado?
Thanks,
Eric

Hey there; I'm thinking of a relocation to Denver or Boulder and am very confused by the HUGE variation of people's opinions. People describe Denver as elitist, rude, dirty, etc., but I've lived in NYC and San Francisco and South Florida and I can tell you about rude pretentious and dirty. Are these just people who have never lived in a big city before and expect Denver to be like Mayberry? I don't get it. What are they comparing it to? It can't be that bad.

Hey; I was wondering how Boulder compares to Denver. I'm liberal, liberal, liberal, but I also know that Boulder is a big college town and I have NO patience for wandering drunken frat boys harrassing people on the streets. Any input would really be appreciated. Thank you.

I always wonder what people mean when they say "elitist." Does that mean in terms of education, money??? You compared it Colorado Springs which is the home to many notorious homophobic organizations. I guess I'm wondering what your reference point is. Also, does Denver feel like a big, crowded, sprawling city?
Thanks you.

Watch out. - 4/18/2008
Huntsville is a very conservative town with a smattering of closeted liberals. It is purely and simply a family town and very, very Christian/religious. A lot of people seem to be moving here for jobs, but you better visit first and talk to lots of locals so that you know what you are getting into. It's very Southern in that people will be extremely nice to your face and then talk smack about you behind your back to anyone who will listen. I've spent 20 years in this town, so take it for what it is worth.
