8/27/2010I feel your comments were negative and misrepresent a city that's gone through great depression and loss that was not the fault of the natives. Youngstowners are incredible people that survived great turmoil yet have the ability to maintain hope.
When it comes to defining Youngstown; Canfield, Boardman, and North Lima have intentionally segregated themselves from the "City" and when asked if they live in the city they will deny living in the city but will gladly work within the "city". When it comes to recreational activities, I agree Youngstown is limited however most activies are in Boardman, Canfield and North Lima.... not the city. Since Monies are always allocated outside of the city, it is difficult to almost impossible to bring activies with limited resources therefore more activities will take place in the suburbs than the city. As for crime, yes crime is a problem, however studies prove where poverty exsist crime prevails - the rememdy is to increase jobs and crime will ultimately decrease.
It is dishartening when people continue to write on negative issues unfortunate happenings yet rarely mention good. Good is still within the our city, people care and are concerned. Our media seldom interview or report positive events or small changes, but quick to magnify the crime and negative stories which utimately gives our suburbean neighbors a very poor image of Youngstown. Could it be the ones that are employed with the local television and radio stations work outside the city and reports are bias?
I applaud Mayor Jay Williams, teachers, YPD, YFD, and other city officials that truly have Youngstown at heart!
