Las Vegas, NV

Mixed Feelings - 9/24/2012
I like Vegas in a lot of respects but dislike it in other respects.

Likes:

Weather - don't have to worry about hurricanes, tornados etc. We have flooding every once in a while. It’s hot but only 3 months out of the year and with the dryness, it doesn’t feel bad. 100 is quite bearable.

Dining – Lots of restaurants and buffets and all price ranges.

Entertainment – A lot to do and all hours of the day - plays, shows, comedy shows, live music, gambling, bowling, bingo etc.

Outdoors – You have the mountains (skiing close by), Lake Mead and Red Rock Canyon that are all beautiful. I would boat on the lake but no way swim in it. It’s filthy. Last time I went there were dirty diapers on the beach! YUCK

Shopping – Abundance of shopping and several outlet malls.

People – I find most people to be very nice and friendly.

Traffic – Traffic is “ok” but it all depends on where you came from. Compared to L.A., it’s a breeze and it definitely doesn’t take that long to get to any part of town. If you are coming from a small town, traffic will probably be horrible to you.

Bugs – very few! Not many mosquitoes. I can’t remember the last time I saw one although they say we have some. No fleas (too hot for them). We have water roaches and in certain areas they have scorpions (I haven’t seen any in over 10 years!). Hardly any flies. You can sit outside and not worry about getting eaten alive.

Hospitals – getting better hospitals. Many complain about the care but we are getting more high quality care centers.

Dislikes:

Crime – high crime everywhere! It’s gotten almost as bad as L.A. and a lot of the L.A. gangs come here for the weekend.

Schools – I don’t have kids but the people that I know that do say the schools are terrible.

Weather –I have this in both categories. Boring!!! I’m tired of the sun. I would like some rain and clouds occasionally. We can go 6-7 months without rain. It is also sporadic. It could be raining 1 mile away and sunny where you are. People in offices run to the window when it rains! It’s so funny!

Doesn’t cool down at night. It can still be 100+ late into the evenings during certain months. No opening windows in the evenings.

Additional Comments:

The housing market is horrible here and jobs are scare but hopefully that will turn-around within the next few years.

Utilities can be expensive, especially in the summer with the air conditioning.

Location – You aren’t far from Mesquite, St. George, Brian Head and Zion. You can also spend a weekend (maybe a long one) at Bryce and the Grand Canyon. San Diego is 5+ hrs and L.A. is 4-4.5 hrs away. However, that’s about it. I feel pretty secluded here. You can only visit the places I listed a certain amount of times before it gets boring.

All is all, it’s an ok place to live but if you like seasons (or any kind of weather variation) and greenery, it wouldn’t be the place for you. I wouldn’t want to raise children here.
