Tarboro, NC | 6 Review(s)

Middle aged female, married, have children and grandchildren. Retired, enjoy decorating, reading, writing, and painting. Trying to get back to the simple life. Moved to Tarboro, NC from Charleston, SC. Not exactly the best choice I've ever made, but not the worst either. Life is a lot slower and simple, simple, simple.

I now live in NC and am considering a move to Ocala for health reasons. My doctor says I need a warmer climate. How is the humidity in Ocala? Do you have any family in Ocala? Was it hard to adjust? Thanks for your replies

Quaint Small Town - 7/26/2009
Tarboro is a small town, but big on hospitality. The people are very friendly and helpful. I moved here almost 4 yrs ago and neighbors welcomed me to the neighborhood with pies, bread and plants. Where do you find that anymore? Main street is lined with old Victorian homes that are just beautiful. The people who own them take great pride in preserving their history. Wonderful town to walk downtown and visit the shops, stop and chat with other 'Tarboronians'.

Now, for the 'down' side. Tarboro does not have much to offer in the way of recreation and entertainment. It has to much fast food and to many 'country fried food' resturants. There are very few decent places to eat, and with those you do get tired of eating the same menu over and over. There is a quality hospital here, but not enough doctors. The doctors don't last long here because there is a lot of indigent care. There is nothing for young people, teenagers and children to do. The school system is very poor. Edgecombe County is one of the poorest counties in North Carolina. The taxes and utilities are extremely HIGH. There is a lot of the 'good ole boy' syndrome here.

If you can ignore the down side, it is a quaint little town where everyone knows everyone and for the most part it is a nice and safe town.

I have been researching different cities on this site for about 3 months, trying to find the perfect place for me to relocate. Every city has someone complaining about racism. There are Asian people who are rude to other Asians and they don't call each other raciest. There are African Americans who are rude to other African Americans and they don't call each other raciest. There are White Caucasians who are rude to other White Caucasians and they don't call each other raciest. Get my point? Just because you are of a different race or nationality does not mean if someone is rude to you, it means it is "racism". It is people who constantly rant racism who keep it alive and well.

You're saying a city of 492,000 people only has restaurants of American cusine?

I feel very strongly about if you don't like where you live, then move. It's not that hard. It is a recreational town, a beach town, vacation spot, etc. Didn't you check this out before you moved to Myrtle Beach? People do ask for opinions on this site and you have every right to give yours. I'm not being mean, just wondering why you live there, when clearly you hate it. Same goes for Tyler too. I don't know what you read saying it was the worst city to live. It is in the top 10 cities to retire. Great restaurants, 32 golf courses, fantastic climate, and entertainment. I'm sorry you are so unhappy.

Small town - 6/19/2009
Tarboro is a small town and honestly there is nothing to do here. I have lived here for 4 yrs (my family have lived here much longer, and you have to drive 16-20 miles to dine out. There is one really good classy resturant in town, the rest are the "country cooking" little red checked tablecloth one room restaurants. The downtown area is quaint with beautiful victorian homes, but they are way over priced for this area.

Cost of living is high. The town and county property taxes are way to high. Your tax appraisal is way above the actual appraisal of your property if you attempt to sell. Utilities are high. It's really unaffordable for us to live here. There is a lot of the "good ole boy" politics here too. Anyway, it is just not the town for us.
