Tom served as CEO of Sarasota Coastal Credit Union, Sarasota, Florida from July 1989 to October 2009. The community credit union has assets of $216.0 million, 25,000 members, 71 employees, and five branches.

After ten years with a consumer finance company, he began his credit union career as the executive vice-president of Government Employees CU (Jacksonville, FL) and then as CEO of State Department of Education CU (Tallahassee, FL). Tom has served on numerous credit union chapter boards and League committees. He is actively involved in his community and is the immediate-past chairman of the board, Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse, a director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and a mentor at a high school.

Tom has been a member of the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES) since 1981 and was elected to its Board of Directors in 1991. He served as Chairman of the Board from 1996-1997 and was elected to the CUES Hall of Fame in 1998. A highlight of his association with CUES was the development of the CEO Institute, a consortium of three universities which confers the prestigious designation of Certified Chief Executive (CCE) on participants successfully completing the three-year program. Tom was a member of the inaugural class to earn the designation of CCE.

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and the designation of Certified Credit Union Executive (CCUE).
