Down to Basics - 1/9/2013
I will start off saying, I was born here in 1975 and have returned throughout my life, for varying amounts of time. This review will be as up to date and honest as possible, as of 2013.
The crime rate here, is not nearly as bad as that in a larger city, but it does exist and it is mainly due to drug abuse. Murders have happened, but they are usually, drug or domestic related. Same as anywhere else. You have to ask yourself, who do you plan on hanging around?
The population is mixed, from a great deal of Caucasian, Native American, Hispanic & a growing Asian population and on the lower scale other races. Over the past ten years, things have been turning towards diversity.
The people can be friendly, but depending on "your" attitude when you arrive, they can be distant. In other words, do not move here and act like you are better than everyone else, because of wherever you hail from and how expensive your education was. Have some simple respect for people and they will do the same in return.
The religious community is diverse, but predominantly Morman. There is even a small Jewish community and Pagan community.
The cost of living is a bit more then when I lived in Phoenix.
Will you see deer on the side of the road, everyday? No. The population has grown too much for that. Go hiking in the woods or along the Rim trail & you will more than likely get a glimpse.
There is beauty here and for all its worth, some measure of safety versus living in a city.
Amenities are slim. There is a Wal-Mart, Home depot, Lowes, Safeway and a few other large businesses. Most of the rest would be small mom and pops.
If you move here, expect a slower pace, but some bad traffic. The influx of people moving here, so quickly, has clogged up the roads a bit, during work hours. The job market is not fantastic, but if you are determined and not looking for 100k a year job, then something will come up.
My advise, visit for a few weeks and test the environment out. We like our guns, have a small western style atmosphere, but have enough of an open mind, to not be classified as Red-necks.
Last note, if you move here and expect California, there will be disappointment.
