I jus hope that when it's time for my kids to go to school that I am in the position to allow my children to attend Pike Countu Schools as well. |

A few years ago I would have considered PCHS as a very good institution of learning, but due to recent events I have wholly changed my mind in this regard. The teachers are still some of the best, but they're being driven off by an inept and unfocused administration who's goals are unseeded in reality both financially and in terms of student education and potential. There is a lack of funding from the Federal Government, sure, but it is made all the worse by the idiotic choice of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on sports, leaving the students with no books and keeping the staff disgruntled. |

It is possible to have both good academics and a successful athletic program, other school systems do and we will as well. We have experienced one successful year in all sports not just football. At least three kids have scholarships and have an chance at a college education that they may not have had otherwise. We do have teachers that care and are going to teach our kids. We also have some teachers, as most all schools do, who concentrate complaining and not on solutions. Our whole nation is strapped for funding from the Fed. Gov. down to each of us as individuals. Lets offer our kids the best the world has to offer, both in academics and extra curricular activities. All work and no play makes unhappy children. |
| 7/6/2005 | teacher | I am a fairly new PCHS teacher. My fellow teachers amaze me with their dedication. The students amaze me with their respect and behavior. But the students have no inate desire to learn. They are bombarded with paranoia concerning discipline and trying to make a mark amidst the football program's overhanging shadow. The administration concerns itself with discipline and NOTHING else. The football program really does receive first priority. I denied it for a long time and thought it was just local gossip. It's true. My fellow teachers fight for basic supplies and fundraise for calculators while the FB team enjoys anything it needs. Such a waste of a really good body of students. I hope the new Superintendant comes through and puts teachers and students first. |

This school system is nothing to brag about except for most of the teachers, they do a great job. |

But anytime I need to get some information from the school and I call and ask them for it I'm given the runaround. What is up with these people? We are the parents. I don't care if the kid didn't fill it out first, I am the parent and I am asking for it to you personally. My kid does NOT have to go there. I can homeschool, private school or anything I want. So be a little nicer. And seeing that everyone else wrote about the football getting all the money, I agree, its a shame. |

Leaking roof, outdated teaching materials, poor quality maintenance, good and experienced teachers abandoning the school all for football. Will the fact that you have a good team get my daughter into a first class college? I doubt it will. We are moving away from this district to one that prides academics, not just football. And by the way, it would be nice for the teachers and administrators to speak standard english. It makes a good example. I have to stop myself from correcting the english of many of the staff members. |
| 2/11/2005 | parent | The High School is terrible. The teachers are all right but are being chased off by the county office and the school board policies. The administrators are doing nothing to keep the good teachers. It will be interesting to see how many teachers leave after this school year. Parents should complain about how much money is being thrown at athletics and the individual departments have to do their own fundraising to buy supplies. Books for math, history and english arrived 3 months after school started. But the football team had all their equipment for the season. Something is very wrong here with these priorities. |

My Daughter attends Pike County High School, has great grades, and has been a Homecoming Court representative every year of her high school career. She's very blessed to be part of this small High School. Great teachers, staff, board members, and superitendant! Pike County is great place to have your children inrolled. |

But it seems like to me and many other students and parents that not just since this year but the football just added to it. That the school board is more concerned about extracurricular activities and sports are more important than education. I mean how do they really expect students to learn from old text books that are atleast 5-10 years old. I mean the world changes everyday and I believe students should be able to see that within a few years time not in 5-10. And a teacher which my child admires is leaving Pike. We aren't sure why except for the fact that he stood up to what he believed in and I teach my daughter to do the same. And i think the school is being a HUGE mistake making him leave. |
| 2/5/2005 | student | This school has poor leadership. The administration is too concerned about athletics to see how poorly students are treated. For example, a teacher, whom I will not name, has been cheating students out of the grades that they deserve. Only students on the 'Favorite Student List' receive good grades, despite the quality of their work. The administration has done nothing to stop this. This teacher determines which students will graduate and which will not. If you were picked a favorite, congratulations, you need not give effort to succeed. As for us students, who are not the 'pets', we work extra hard and receive insulting grades. But who cares? It's just academics. Sports are so much more important. |
| 2/4/2005 | teacher | 'PIKE COUNTY SCHOOLS WHERE CHILDREN COME FISRT' I dont think this is true, it is just a catch phrase to impress parents. I have been teaching at Pike County for several years and I have seen first hand how the administration caters to the athletics program and not to academics. High School student schedules are set up so that the students can attend weight lifting class, so that the football program can benefit. Little consideration is given to the academic schedule of studnets. The teaching staff is very good but it is slowly dwindling away because of how the administration treats the teachers and does not place emphasis on academics. The student body is very good but unfortunately the county school board will never find out how good the teaching staff is or how good the student body is... This exists because the poor leadership at the superintendent and assistant superintendent levels. |
