9/6/2012parentI have only been involved with the school for a little over a month and I am extremely disappointed with it. We moved here over the summer and everyone told me not to send my kids to this school, but I ignored it since I thought I would try to support the public school system. I'm not sure how much longer I will give it before looking into other options. It's disorganized, my son is afraid of his teacher, the crossing guard in front the the school is so rude I can't even believe it. I actually worry about my kids every day that they go there. Not a good feeling.
3/2/2012parentI agree with some of the other reviews that Abney gets a bad rap. I feel as though this is partly do to its location. The administration is wonderful and if you are a caring supportive parent you can really see how great of a school this is! My daughter went here for kindergarten even though we were hesistant we beleive in supporting our public schools! We were pleasantly surprised and I have talked very highly of the school ever since! My daughter has since been to two other schools and I still feel strongly about abney!
4/26/2011parentAbney is a great school it's a growing school and the school board needs to see that and give the teachers some much needed help in the class rooms there are so many children in this school now that the teachers need aids because the classes are so big there isn't enough time to get to very child. and there saying is every child what ever it takes, so lets make sure that happens help the children and teachers. it's a great school lets not give it a bad name just because it's students count is so large we need aids and more teachers for our children. at abney they make your child feel special, and that's what counts our children.
3/31/2010parentMy child has been at Abney this year as a fourth grade student. It has been a very good year for him. His teachers are very caring and effective teachers. They work very hard to make sure my son is learning. The principal is also very good. He has met with me several times to discuss issues that I was concerned about and he actually solved them. The school has much to offer and sometimes receives a bad rap.
11/21/2009parentI can only say that this school is a caring school. I like the open door policy of the principal. He actually does it. The teachers are very good and the school hard to give all students a chance to be successful My child also is safe and that is very important to me.
11/14/2009parentI have four daughters and thus far two have attended Abney(one is still there in the 5th grade). I must say that I am happy with the teachers and staff they have there. They have always been blessed with teachers who loved and had passion for teaching and due to this one of my daughters have all honor courses in Jr. high. Some may think there isn't any dicipline but in my opinion decipline starts at home; they aren't our childrens parents...we are!
11/3/2009parentThe teachers and administration are wonderful and understanding. I also love how quickly they came back after Hurricane Katrina and I was able to out my child in school immediately!
9/17/2009parentI love this school because they really care about the students. They are constantly promoting positive re-enforcement and treating others with kindness. And they have really made the safety and well-being of the students a huge priority. They also seem to research the best teaching techniques that will benefit the kids most.
8/20/2009parentThis year starts the beginning of my daughters 3rd year at Abney and she absolutely loves her classmates and her teacher. I feel she could had learned more last year in her class due to a young teacher, but I have high hopes for her teacher this year. We are both excited to see what the year brings.
6/18/2009parentI'd say it fits the category of needs improvement. absolutely no dicipline whatsoever. My child will not be returning
1/29/2009parentAbney Elementary is growing and changing. The administration and teachers are working hard every day to ensure students are properly educated. Teachers stay after school for hours, sacrificing family time, trying to develop new and exciting lessons. The school is located in a low socio-economic area, which often creates problems with behavior.
1/27/2009parentI have just transferred my children to this school. I had heard some things that made me a little nervous. However, i was able to actually sit down with the principal who took the time to assure me my children would be taken care of. the school has a great environment and is very active in arts
1/24/2009parentMy chikdren have gone to this school for 4 years. The school has significantly improved versus the previous years. A new administration has made great changes. School now is very safe, teachers are happy and working hard. School is doing great things with art and music
10/3/2008parentI have not had any complaint about the work being taught to my daughter. She does however mention how her teacher sometimes ignore her on certain matter and instead tend to other student and ignore her and some of the other students of her status quo, if you know what I mean?
10/1/2008parentThis school is just horrendous! I don't know how in the heck it ever won a blue ribbon award. The teachers are extremely laxed and subpar!!! Alot of these teachers aren't teaching, they just show up for the paychecks!!
1/7/2008parentMy child is new to this school and I'm sorry to say, I am very disappointed. Although, I do like my child's teacher the administration and safety is this school is lacking. I do not feel that my child is safe. I am looking for a new school.
10/17/2007parentabney school is great love it i rate it a 5 star school
10/16/2007otherI am a older Southeastern Elementary Education student that has observed many different schools not only in the Slidell area but also in Orleans Parish and Tangipahoa Parish. I have spent quite some time at Abney and am very impressed with the quality of education that the students are receiving. This is definitely a school I where I would like to teach but would also send my own children there if they were still in elementary school.
6/6/2007parentAdmin. does not have control of the students, teachers are fighting to teach in a substandard environment, education is lacking by national standards, most Kindergardeners advance not knowing how to read. Lower grades don't have advanced options when proven to excell, begining of the year reportcards do not reflect actual academics if the child is advanced, so they have recorded progress.
12/19/2006parentThe Abney administration & teachers are first rate. They gave of themselves during this past year & a half while living in trailers. My two children love going to Abney and the friends they have made. They are progressing nicely.
8/12/2006parentAbney is a wonderful elementary school. The faculty and staff are fantastic. Recent improvements since Hurricane Katrina are great. We feel our children are in a very safe environment.
1/7/2005parentAbney is a great school. the Teachers & staff are very caring and nurturing. I am very pleased with the development of my 2 children.
4/10/2004parentThe best part about Abney is the teachers. The teachers are caring and take the time to work with the students. On the negative, this school is old and out-of-date. New technology would also be a plus in this school.
