2/19/2012studentThis school is absolutely the best school I can possibly imagine. The students have multiple talents ranging from sports to musical arts. The school had a great basketball season, holding the state title for over half of the season. The teachers and students were pumped to see such great people support their winning team. Even in a loss, students were still respectful towards players & parents. The band has a great reputation at the school with a positive attitude towards all students. Practicing after school every Monday and Thursday, they work to achieve the big state title at the end of the season. The football team also had a positive message towards students in band by buying the band a cake to motivate band students that this school wants the state title. The school is located in a great community that is fairly new. Everything is well built to meet high-end expectations. It's also located near a fire & police department within the famous Snowden Grove Ballpark. I cannot think of anybody who does not love the principal. He disciplines fairly well and distributes his message towards everybody. He is a great man who puts his all into making this school a "first-class school."
11/9/2011studentA great school. The environment of the school is welcoming and hardly any violence or none. Amazing band/drumline program especially with winning State Championships back-to-back(2010 & 2011). Mr. Cox does all in his power to prepare the students for a new season of marching/concert seasons. Any college in the area who is looking for a band student would have already heard of DC Band's great reputation.
10/18/2011parentThe academics of this school are above average for what you can expect for this area. The overall environment of the school is positive. The band is the best in the northern part of the state and has tremendous support from the community, in fact it is one of the few places where the band outshines the football team in support and recognition and it is certainly the pride of the school. If your student is in band there is no better school in the state for them to attend. The student population is mostly upper middle that has an over inflated sense of its self and is hyper materialistic. This culture exists in all High schools but is more prevalent here than in most and the parents are no different. The athletic program has modest to below average support Central is athletically not taken seriously by the other 6a High schools. The Athletic program is the epitome of politics in athletics, particularly in This year it is widely rumored in the community that the baseball team was selected before the tryout s were even held. No one will go on record and say it but behind the scenes everyone talks about it.
4/13/2011studentI'm a graduate of the class of 2009 and an always very diversely involved student throughout my tenure at DCHS. I came across this site while searching for something else, and decided to read some reviews for my high school. I was somewhat surprised and dismayed at what I saw. DCHS is certainly not a BAD high school. It has many positives, and especially relative to other high schools in the county and state, I would rank it in the top fourth. However, anyone that holds an opinion similar to: "A really excellent high school and all the teachers and staff are amazingly helpful", is absolutely incorrect. The real, objective as possible, truth is the following: 90% of the teachers there are just fundamentally not that smart and can thus provide an education in any of their respective subjects that fails to surpass a 10th grade level. The ONLY teachers intellectually proficient enough are the 4 or 5 that teach the AP classes (limited to few students). I slept through nearly every class and graduated with a 4.36 GPA, never making a B. Also in response to another comment, though the DC band always does well, the director Mr. Cox is undeserving of any positive feedback ever received.
5/18/2010parentMy son is a senior and has attended DeSoto Central for the past 4 years. The entire staff including administrators, teachers, counselors, etc. have been absolutely wonderful to work with. My child has a special education ruling and I couldn't be happier with the services that he received and how willing everyone was to comply with his IEP. He is going to college on full scholarship thanks to their support. GREAT school!
10/29/2009parentMy daughter loves the school & is having a great high school experience...that gives me peace of mind in this day & time!!
9/18/2009studentI graduated from dchs. As a student, I see that half the teachers care about actually teaching, the other half care more about sports etc. They have decent sports teams, and a relatively good band. I came from a California school, Desoto county can not compete with the education system in California. For a country school, if you want your kid to know about farming and killing animals, I would suggest to send them here. If you want your kids to succeed in life, maybe a different school choice. It's not a bad education, but certainly not the best.
8/29/2009studentI think its quite funny how parents comment on here talking about how 'bad' the school is when they really have no clue. All you know is what your children tell you and the truth is, when your kids act up and get in trouble all the time because they don't know how to behave, of course they are going to tell you how 'bad' the teachers are. It's there way of revenge. I absolutely love going to this school and wouldn't go anywhere else in the county. The teachers do care about the students and strive to teach them. DC prepares students for the real world. You may think that we have 'strict' rules, but honestly if you continuosly don't dress like your boss tells you, you're going to get fired. If you show up for work late on a daily basis, you are going to get fired.
7/28/2009parentgreat school. both of kids went there. loved it. Band program is wonderful. outstands any program in Desoto county as far as director's, band members, parents(that seem to always get along) and the booster's. you simply can not beat it
12/22/2008studentAs a graduate of DCHS, I would not have gone to any other school in DeSoto County. DCHS has it's fair share of problems, just like any other school, but for the most part the students' education is put first. All of these parents writing bad reviews of the teachers must have children that aren't willing to put forth any effort. The teachers do everything in their power to help us, but if a child isn't willing to learn-what good is it? The school has an amazing band program. Mr. Cox (the band director) is the most caring teacher I have ever had. He teaches not just to be a part of band, but discipline, responsibility, and honor. I received a full scholarship to the University of Mississippi and I credit DCHS for helping me along the way. I highly recommend this school for anyone new to the county.
11/1/2008parentthis is the worst high school that my children have attended. we have lived in thre other states and when we moved here the school was highly recommend but has turned out to be lacking in overall quality
8/28/2008parentThis is a very wonderful school for all ages.
7/19/2008studentthis school is good its helped me get more diciplined
7/11/2008studentGood school, firm dress code. But seeing as I am from the north, coming from a school that is one of the best in the nation, its alittle easier. But the teachers make it fun and enjoyable. (well atleast most of them) The only thing I dislike is paddels for punishment
5/28/2008parentI think DCHS is a great school. Every school has it's share of problems, but DCHS has kept God in the school and that is what makes a difference.
5/20/2008parentThis was the worst experiance with a public we have ever had. From the principle to the custodians, the teachers were the worst!!! they worry more about the dress code than the children. I would never recommend this school to anyone if you care about your children. The teachers should not be teaching, in the whole school there was only one who cared about her students. To be respected you first need to respect. If you are from out of this state don't bring your children here! i could go on nd on but there is not enough room
11/1/2007parentThere are a few good teachers, at Desoto Central High. The majority are only there to draw a paycheck not teach. EX. The student is told by the teacher on a daily basis, turn to page __ in your workbook, follow instructions, do the work online, and tell her your score when completed. That is the extent of her teaching process. The kids are struggling and teaching themselves. If a parent/teacher meeting is held it is basically a waste of time, because irregardless of the issue, the teacher is not only considered right, but backed by the school, the parent and student always wrong, especially for wasting the time of the 'teacher(s)'. Arrogance abounds in the DCHS teacher's lounge.
4/8/2007parentI like this school but some of the teachers are really teaching the children like they should. Getting them ready for state test is a big concern. My child likes it there and the band program is the greatest thing at the scholl. Mr. Cox is a techer who cares about the students not just wanting them to do good to make him look good. All of the fine arts there are pretty good. I would like to see the administration not just take the teachers side all the time even when they know the paren is right. It is good to back your teachers because I know there are some wacky parents out there, but when you know that the teacher is in the wrong it should be addressed and shoved aside. All in all I like the school but it is way to clickish.
