2/25/2012parentAn excellent school with a great mix of options for students from struggling to high achieving. The guidance staff does a fantastic job of helping kids select a good balance of appropriately challenging classes. The current principal is very hands on, greeting students, staying actively involved. The irchestra program is top notch with opportunities for all, from the okay players to truly talented musicians. There are enough students to assure that there are a variety of social opportunities. But, the population is small enough that it is not overwhelming.
2/25/2012parentAn excellent school with a great mix of offerings for students at all levels. A fantastic music program, an excellent art program, strong leadership, and an outstanding guidance department are aming the school's strongest assets.
7/29/2011teacherAs a former student and teacher I can tell you this school does nothing for average learners.
5/13/2011otheri graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius HS back in 1989. i currently live in the Los Angeles area, and the schools just can't compare to schools back East, especially the schools in Upstate NY. F-M was and I'm sure still is the absolute best school in the area, and anyone would be lucky to attend! Great Memories and great teachers!
4/23/2009studentThis is a great school. I am a freshman and regularly participate in advanced courses. Some of the teachers are iffy, but what school isn't like that. They offer a large variety of courses and have great music/arts, great sports, great science programs, very good math programs, and very good english/social studies programs. As mentioned, the Science Olympiad team places first at States nearly every year, I believe seven in a row currently. The Social Studies department also host at MUN (model United Nations conference) at SU college every year, where hundreds of kids form dozens of schools, participate in very realistic UN conferences. They offer four languages: Spanish; French; German; and Latin. I am even able to take some AP courses as a sophomore. This being said, there is a TON of work involved, with hours of homework but still, a GREAT SCHOOL for the intellectually gifted.
7/18/2008studentAs much as I disliked being at FM I have to admit that it prepared me well for college. The math department is fantastic in my opinion but I can't say the same for any other department. Very competitive atmosphere, it drives many to cheat on tests or in one extreme case to hack into the computer system to change their grades.
7/15/2008otherIt's an excellent school. Yes, it's competitive. (Is that a bad thing?) Yes, there are cliques. (Show me a high school that doesn't have them.) And sure, a student who doesn't come from the upper middle class might feel uncomfortable at times, but 'the real world' isn't always comfortable either. Bottom line is--look at the test scores. Look at the graduation and college attendance rates. Look at the education levels of the teachers. Look at the money in the district. There are a few private/prep schools nearby, but if you can afford to live in the Town of Manlius, your child will get a better education and more opportunities in the FM public schools.
3/18/2007studentReally, these review sites seem to be just a place for people to stand on their soapboxes and moan. I am a sophomore here, and I love it. The teachers are competent, and the students (at least, those I know well) are intelligent, friendly, and competitive. I don't want the administration doing anything more than they do, which is stay behind the scenes and run the administrative tasks.
12/8/2006studentSo so soooo overrated. This school has a wonderful music program, but only in the high school! Eagle hill has a great string program. It gets 100 times better in the high school...It's just the question of how long you can stick it out in the middle school. Art is good. Sports are amazing, but too pushy. Soooo much homework! sometimes it takes me over 6 hours. I am not joking. This school is great for kids who are incredibly intelligent. If you are just average you get lost in the squabble over who is going to yale and who isn't. This school is terribly competitive.
11/4/2006former studentFM has no administrative leadership. I had only seen the principal about 2 times outside of school assemblies while I was at FM. FM also has one of the biggest problems with cliques. FM has a great music program along with their sports programs, but the school seems to only concentrate on these areas and not improve upon others. I wouldn t want my kids attending FM.
10/25/2006parentI am a parent of a freshman in the high school. I have seen an improvement in the academic content and the involvement or I should say less involvement from the Administration. I have to say the Wellwood Middle School Administration is awful, beyond words. They tend to be over involved in telling you how to raise your child and less involved in what might actually help the student academically. I believe that it is the parents involvement with their children in this community that makes the school successful, not the school itself.
10/13/2006studentMost of what you hear about FM is sugar coated. The teachers vary. Some great, some terrible. Facility are good. Sports facilities especially. Sports are a huge thing at this school. It gets way better in the high school. Art is very strong. The Administration is bad. Overall this school has many pros and cons. If you're moving to the area, check out the Jamesville-Dewitt schools before settling with FM.
10/12/2006studentI go to fm and I can tell you that it absolutely is not one of the 'greatest schools in new york'. The kids are pretentious and fake, along with their parents. If you dont fit in you stick out like a sore thumb. The english department is phenomenal, but not enough people give it credit. In my senior year now, I wish I had switched out long before.
4/2/2006former studentFayetteville manlius high-school is by far the best school in new york state! They are extremely progressive and are led by a stellar superintendent! I would recommend this district to anyone!
3/22/2006parentI had 3 children who went to this high school. Some teachers were very good, others were adequate, far too many were simply terrible. The behavior of some teachers seemed very odd and unprofessional. This is a wealthy school district with very ambitious children. The children excel in spite of disturbing problems relating to the administration of this school and its teachers, which is probably why it escapes closer examination. Despite the fact that my children complained about this school, I continued to send them there, as I was more inclined to (want to) believe the reputation, than question what kind of a school it really was. I am sorry I did not pay closer attention. My last child had a much better experience at another high school.
12/20/2005parentOne of the best public schools in the state. Excellent academics and instructors. Extracurriculars abound. Your child will graduate more than ready for college.
9/19/2005parentThis is a fantastic school. The art and music programs are extraordinary, and the teachers are wonderful.
5/2/2005studentGood school, kids are safe at school. Music, art and sport departments are great. Parent teacher conferences are allowed at any time. Academic programs are of high-quality; math department has some complaints
1/16/2005studentFM is very strong in almost all subject areas, and is working to improve the other ones. Our art program is highly ranked nationally, our cross-country team is really good, and our science olympiad team recently placed first at the national competition. Parents are very involved here, and students are very motivated academically.
7/9/2004parentFMHS is a great school for the academically gifted. This year the Science Olympiad Team won first place in the nation! Our Math League regularly wins local and regional competitions. This is also a great school for the artistically gifted. Both the music and the art departments have won awards year after year. Our art students consistently win scholastic art awards. I have two children, both graduated, one who went to college as an art major (now in grad. school) and one who is entering college this fall as a chemistry major. Both of my children had a great experience in the FM school district and found the high school to have been a great experience.
8/31/2003parentI have 2 daughters that graduated and a son in the Sophmore class now. This school is like most schools in this area. They are very interested in education and sports and grooming for college. We have several sports programs for our children and many options for education. There is a very diverse population as far as economics and that is sometimes a problem for some students. All in all my children have enjoyed there experience at this school and were very well educated.
