| 1/13/2010 | parent | Ams is the perfect place to send your teen during those rough years when the 'breaking away from parents and becoming an autonomous being' process has started......Nurturing with an iron fist, a wonderful mix of academics and life (on the frontier!).....Technology lain by the side of the road alongside a crumpled sack of junkfood......Public school was never kind to my daughter....She being of the quirky, thoughtful, curious, artsy and sensitive type...She can finally rest here at ams...Thank you. |
| 1/7/2010 | parent | AMS has been a great experience for our daughter. AMS serves the whole child. I believe we will come to appreciate more and more as years go by what AMS has contributed to her personal growth and development. I am so comforted by the support and real connection all the faculty make with each student. This is so evident when we receive long written evaluations of our daughter's performance at school. AMS has always been on the mark regarding our daughter's strengths and weakness. It is so gratifying to see our teen taking responsibilty for her own education. We are happy her edcuation includes taking part in a living and learning community. AMS is an experience every teen deserves! |
| 1/6/2010 | parent | AMS is absolutely perfect for our active middle-schooler. She's constantly learning, both inside and outside the box, which is (obviuosly) the way they want it. It's very difficult to call anything they do 'extra' curricular, because it's all part of the experience, part of the learning. |
| 1/6/2010 | parent | Sending our son to AMS for 3 years was the best thing we could have done for him. He learned the most important lessons: that one is responsible for oneself, that relationships with the environment are reciprocal, the value in sharing with community. The natural mountain ambiance, healthy lifestyle and food, loving staff, huge range of experiences including travel, community service, hiking, camping, exposure to crafts/arts and life skills, and diverse social contacts were all added perks. He came away 'over the hump' of those uncomfortable, irritable adolescent years, was prepared socially, academically and emotionally for high school and life in general. 7th-9th grade is a critical time of life and the staff at AMS knows how to guide and support students through it. We will be eternally grateful for them and the experience they provided for our son. |
| 1/6/2010 | parent | At AMS, students discover who they are as individuals while learning how to live productively in community. The middle school years seem early for boarding school, but it's the perfect time for them to learn these lessons. As an AMS graduate, my daughter knows from experience that she can do anything she sets her mind to. She also appreciates her responsibility to others and to the world. I was surprised to find that AMS improved my relationship with my daughter, permanently; this is because she is now so happy within herself. She graduated two years ago and went on to a very academically competitive high school and is doing well, thanks to having learned hard work and self-organization at AMS. Sending her to AMS is the only parenting decision I've ever made that I'm certain was totally right. |
| 9/16/2009 | other | It helps young people become self affirming yet modest. |
| 11/3/2007 | parent | AMS has been a wonderful, nontraditional school experience for our son. It's small size and student to teacher ratio make this a loving and supportive community. The campus is located in the most beautiful mountain area of the state. Our son has particularly enjoyed the hiking, biking and service learning opportunities. We see such growth and maturity, especially in areas of personal responsibility and relationships. We especially like the idea that he is being exposed to an alternate lifestyle,a simple way of living, in harmony with nature, with thought to the impact of his actions on both his small community and the world. Healthful food and no technology are a plus. We feel that sending him was the best decision for this crucial time in his development. Our other children are jealous, we wish we had discovered AMS years ago for them. |
| 5/11/2006 | parent | This school is wonderful! My daughter, Samantha, was a student there about 10 years ago, and now is an intern there, while taking a couple of years off before going to vet school. She is teaching math and Shakespear. The school is experiential, and teaches kids that they are responsible for learning and for their behavior. They live in small, group homes, where they help manage the budget. This means that these kids will not grow up into adults with credit problems. They also raise much of their own food. While some of the homes are vegetarian, they raise chickens and turkeys, which they slaughter and dress themselves - so they learn that food doesn't just come in packages. The learning environment is rich, and encourages creativity. The result is developing well-balanced kids with a sense of their part in the world. Academically, my daughter was well prepared, and graduated cum laude in Chemistry. |
