Baltimore is a diverse and complete East Coast city—though not always thought of that way by some who consider it the less attractive sister of Washington, D.C. It surrounds a major inland port on the upper portion of the Chesapeake Bay, with prosperous shipping, transportation, and manufacturing industries among others.
