| Crime - 6/4/2006
There tends to be a lot of violent crime in the city(28 shootings, 17 deaths memorial day weekend), if you go to the outskirts(burbs) its better. Problem is, then you deal with(if you're brown) violent crimes committed by police officers who will not be charged. Every summer it just gets worse.

| Education - 5/30/2006
Milwaukee Public Schools is in trouble. The larger schools have transformed into many more smaller schools, but with only sporadic support from the district. The voucher program is expanding, despite no documentation that the existing program is successful. Milwaukee's urban students tend to be segregated and below the poverty-level, and these social problems are reflected in the schools.

| Sadly, Milwaukee Needs Help - 5/9/2006
I have lived in the Milwaukee area for the past 15 years and for sure it has its good points: for one thing the restaurant and arts scenes in this town are vastly underrated. Some of its neighborhoods are not to be missed, especially on the West Side (Washington Heights and Story Hill. The East Side however, is vastly overrated, with its residents liking to say its diverse. Hogwash, the place is so white it will blind you.
The biggest block to Milwaukee's growth is its leadership, comprised mostly of some of the most incompetent people ever to draw a breath. The Common Council increases taxes and fees every year (which are already almost twice the national average), while at the same time cutting services. Race relations are in the toilet. As for jobs, you can find one, but will it be one up to your skills? Regardless, taxes will take a huge bite out of your income. And what extra services do you get? Well you will get a bunch of municipal and state workers who don't believe they have to answer to anyone.
If you're looking for suburbs, Wauwatosa tops my list: a comfortable mix of upper crust and down to earth. Least reccommended? That would be Mequon, a vastly overpriced enclave that reminds me of what a town would look like if Martha Stewart, Adolph Hitler, and Felix from 'The Odd Couple' all got what they wanted.
So while Milwaukee has clear advantages, the bad sadly outweighs the good.

| Milwaukee - great architecture and restaurants - 1/23/2006
I lived in Milwaukee for 30 years and recently moved to Seattle, WA. I come back to visit often and have a new found appreciation for Milwaukee. The architecture of the residential buildings is simply gorgeous! The craftsmanship is superb as are the building materials - lannon stone is not found many places west of the Mississippi. The homes in Milwakee were built to last. The ethnic restaurants are to die for... I miss the hot ham and potato rolls on Sundays, the custard from Kopps and the Kiltie in Oconomocow, ham salad at local delis and of course REAL Italian bread and REAL Italian sausage from places like Dentice and Groppis. Not to mention the pizza from Balistreris on 68th. There is no decent bread or pizza in Seattle! All the bread is some type of sourdough. And the cheese and beef here taste very different. Milwaukee city government has a history and knows pretty much how to run things - NOT Seattle! Lots of buffoons for city planners here - especially transportation planners. Boulevards in Milwaukee are resplendent with gorgeous flowers in the summer... boulevards in Seattle only have grass and trees. Seattle has one thing going for it that Milwaukee has no control over - and that's the weather - just too cold and way too much snow for this old gal to handle... otherwise I might still be there. And I hope no one reads Otis' comments... I can't understand anything he TRIED to say... very incoherent.

How Otis comments on the lack of education in Milwaukee, when his posting is barely understandable.

| i disagree - 10/6/2005
i disagree with the comment posted below. you'll find on this website, a posting from me regarding Dothan, Alabama. i grew up in & around the Milwaukee area (and as such, may be slightly jaded). in 2004, my wife & i moved to Alabama. we miss the variety, culture, & lifestyle (though we do not miss the snow & cold). after going back to Milwaukee to visit earlier this year-2005-it became evident to us what Milwaukee stood for. it was plainly obvious to us the influence Miller Beer & Harley-Davidson have had on this town. while it may not compare with larger cities such as chicago or new york, we have a love for this city, so much so, that we feel we must go back to it. and we are-10/17/05. if, however, you live in a small town (<100,000 people), and have a desire to move to a larger city, but not so large that you just don't exist, give Milwaukee a fair shot (keeping in mind that it does get COLD). just wanted to add a little more perspective to the city. and don't forget, Milwaukee is the "festival capital of the USA"-more festivals with more variety than any other city i've ever known. thanks for reading!...

| Milwaukee, WI - 8/30/2005
Personally I have lived here in Milwaukee for six years coming originally from Chicago Ill, left for 5 year to serve in the military and have been back for about 4 years now and I can say with all honesty that this is a place slow to change or keep pace with the change in times. The people of Milwaukee seem to have no real identity and seem to try and rob symbol for other more popular cities. You have a large portion that what to keep the city suck in a 1950s idealogy which is not product for city growth or its social conscience. Through it is the largest city in the State of Wisconsin it seem have its tax dollars going to neighboring cities that want nothng more than to seperate itself from it, but enjoys taking the Cities funds. The States income is second only to the state of New York just without the that cities services. If you're someone in the Finance Field then Wisconsin is ideal since it is a financial hub, if you're looking for countless jobs in the services field then again Wisconsin is the place to be. The city of milwaukee boost it education system is second to none and that is a nice place to live. I personally feel that the educational system is below average and in serious need of improvement, i've never before seen so many people with GEDs some dropping out of High School months before graduation. If you find yourself trying to decide between two jobs, one in Wisconsin and the other somewhere else, PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SAKE AND PEACE OF MIND CHOOSE SOMEWHERE ELSE
