A small piece of a bigger puzzle - 8/26/2017

It is hard to discuss Canton without putting it into the larger context of Northeast Ohio(Cleveland/Akron/Canton) Canton itself has added a nice Arts district, miles of trails via Stark Parks, Vineyard, libraries, and of course the nearly 1 Billion in investments that are starting to come in for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Village. There are many quality colleges and a couple of good hospital systems, Akron/Canton airport is very easy to get in and out of and has some great discount flights. Cleveland Hopkins an hour away. Because of the NFL/Hall of Fame, I have met/been entertained by many celebrities who would bypass a small city market....but they come here. The economy has struggled, but is coming back as one of the largest oil/natural gas shelfs in America was recently discovered south of here and as the jobs market diversifies/adjusts. There is also a large amount of renovation of historic buildings. The weather is OK/glorious for 7 months(mid April to mid November, but awful for 5 months(mid November/mid April). I usually plan a few vacation trips to warm places in the colder months. The Summers are fun, and the Autumn rocks. Nearby is Amish country. Great hiking. Cleveland sports, Akron Rubber Ducks baseball, Canton Charge NBA D league basketball. If you feel isolated in this small community, Akron is 20 miles away, cleveland 50-60, pittsburgh 2 hours, Columbus 2 hours and also nearby Lake Erie which is like a fresh water sea. Basically, you have access to great rural and large metro experiences within an hour. Canton does have issues, but remedies are near by. Is the glass half empty or half full? It depends on what you are looking for. I have lived many places in the world and Canton is a good home base for me. I enjoy its gems and travel enough to fill in what it lacks. Probably not a bad prescription for any community.

Fly Over Country - 1/20/2016

Grew up in Ohio, spent the first 25 years of life there and enjoyed. On the East Coast in Boston, MA now. It was a good place for a kid. If you have any ambition at all in life, get out. Ohio with Walmart as the largest employer and the Auto industry in decline, it will continue its downward spiral. Growth is key. Property values will continue to decline. Houses abandon. It is sad but true. If you are happy sitting in your house, blinds pulled, large screen TV on 24/7, no interests, Perfect place! . If you are intellectually curious at all get the hell out!

Canton, Ohio Sucks - 6/25/2014

Canton, Oh is a rathole yes this place will suck the life out of you, yes there are plenty of prostitutes, drug dealers and users everything is true. Your chance of getting robbed in the city is becoming petty high. This place is a slum even the city will not cut grass let alone renters and home owners. Most work here is minimum wage jobs where you will never get ahead. A lot of people are dirtbags who would rather toss there empty beer/wine bottle in your yard instead of a trash can. There are more welfare moms than you can count who are more happy to just send their 6 kids outside to do what ever they want instead of teaching them right from wrong ( that's what the police are for, if they ever show up). If you are even thinking about moving here because of the low rent or price of houses please read my post and the above post first because the heartache may not be worth it and if you visit and want to meet the residents of this city just come to a local Walmart on the 1st of the month when the food stamp card is refilled.

I left canton along time ago because i could not see a future here.i guess that old saying that gose its not what you know its who you know holds true in canton you mite as well leave because thers no where to go if your in the downtown area to where you can sit down and have a meal maby strik up a conversation on what going on in canton.canto dosent tell you that downtown moved out to Beldan village in order to find some people that you could possibly talk to downtown is dead they have plenty of jails there and they have no problem showing you the inside of one ether and after they put that bad t in your mouth your ready to leave.another thing canton is not doing any thing to get the people interested in any thing that has to do with making canton an interesting place to live. one place i think you should look at is the twin city they got it go in on there look it up Minneapolis Mn

A great place to live - 2/16/2012

Canton is a great place to live. In the city there are plenty of parks, museums (President Mckinley Museum, First Ladies Museum and the Pro Football Hall of Fame), art gallery, D-league basketball, area league football, excellent players guild. Even in the winter there's near by skiing, not to mention plenty of hills for your taboggans. Exellent road system and public transportion makes it easy to get a round and below average cost of living index are additonal plus.

Canton holds child support from children for half a year and I would never live in a place that keeps money from children.

Can't wait to leave. - 7/27/2010

I moved to Canton to teach and coach football and aside from those two things I can't wait to be out of there next year. The city is boring. There is nothing to do on the weekends (during the off-season)that is at all exciting and most of the city is full of older people. There are no cool neighborhoods that you can go out in and enjoy yourself. I'm from Cleveland and I know Cleveland isn't all that great, but Canton make C-Town look like Manhattan.

say what you will... but Canton OH has been good t - 3/29/2010

I've been enjoying the site, comparing places I've been with places I might be going. Then I stumbled upon some reviews for Canton Ohio, where I currently am. I was surprised that comments seemed so far removed from my experiences that I thought I'd write and add a dissenting voice. Canton Oh is a Midwest, blue collar town. I grew up here then moved away. But as we age, and our parents age, sometimes we find ourselves back in our hometowns whether we planned it or now. Thus... I'm back in Canton OH. And you know what... I'm surprised. I'm an artist and lived in the greater Denver CO area for many years. When I first moved "home", I was very concerned... that as an artist I might starve. But I've been amazingly surprised at Canton Ohio's effort to support the arts. If you tour downtown Canton OH you'll see amazing public works of art, exciting galleries in the downtown area. And most importantly, you'll sense a spirit of rebirth and camaraderie among those of us involved with this new "Arts District." We're grateful to find kindred spirits and especially grateful to be supported in this small Midwest town. So say what you may... if you're near Canton OH, come downtown on the First Friday of the month and you'll be amazed at the talent, the excitement and the fun that can be generated in what used to be a nondescript midwest town. You don't want to live here - 10/17/2009

I was born and raised in Canton. I hate it people are so selfish and rude most of the time. Employers are the worse. They have so may people to choose from due to unemployment have no respect for the employees generally. Housing, Well good luck with that. With most people making min. wage hard to make a living at all here.

Please don't move here! - 6/20/2009

I have lived in Canton almost my entire life. All I can say is that Canton has become a great big GHETTO! There are no jobs, crime is rampant, drug deals and prostitution goes on in broad daylight, the "homeless" stand at every Wal-mart parking lot holding signs begging for money, all while smoking cigarettes! This city invests no money into the children of this city(believe I know, I have 5) All they do seem to care about is McKinley basketball and football. Wow we have the pro football HOF and a parade and induction once a year. This does not a city make. The income taxes are terrible(straight 2% regardless) and then they still expect you to be responsible for everything. What exactly does our tax dollars go to? I hate living here and feel unsafe at night. After I'm out of my degree program, we are leaving this terrible city and state!

Canton's Okay - 9/21/2008

Canton's a fairly nice city (lots of trees) with better than average museums, etc., for a city of its size. However, the economy is terrible and the sight of so many stores and shops closing is depressing. People here are extremely friendly and the cost of living is relatively low. Overall, Canton's an okay place to live.

I've lived in Canton for 19 years and have watched - 4/4/2007

you are a community activist trying to save drug addicts and prostitutes. There are absolutely no jobs other than minimum wage, if you can find one, there are tons of sex offenders, and mostly, it seems that every young man, even those with potential, are doing the only thing they can in this city to survive, better known as selling crack. There is so much drug related crime that it's scary to let your kids play outside, even in the 'nice' areas. I know four or five people PERSONALLY who have been killed over the last couple years. People don't smile and wave, they look at everyone as a suspect, for good reason. I can't wait to leave, but right now have to remain in this city to take care of aging parents. This is a terrible town to raise children or try to make a life.

good place to save money - 1/29/2007

cost of living is very low, city is really not the pretty, but its nice in the summer, it is a good place to save money, unlike Los Angeles, you can rent a three story house for the price of one bed room apt in LA.

What happened to this place - 12/21/2006

This city has terrible schools. Graduation rate is about 60% for the city. Unemployment is much higher than reported, it is just most people have run out of benefits. The crime rate is through the roof. The average non-professional worker earns around $8.00 per hour. The foreclosure listing in the weekly paper is at least two pages long. There are abandoned houses on every block. I would not recommend moving to this place if you want children and want them to have a future.

sad Canton - 11/24/2006

I moved here several years back from the west coast. I just hate the area and the schools. But I feel the street people mentality is the worst I have ever seen. It’s like living among a community of drug addicts. Petty crime seems to be the only form of entertainment for the young and alcoholism seems to be the way of the older generation. The unemployment is high and the job wages are low. Local government says that the economy is growing; yet there are 19-20% of the residents living below the federal poverty guidelines. I feel that Canton is a places to run from.

Crime Over Night - 10/17/2006

I moved back to Canton Ohio in 2005 for a short period. I was born and raised there. I have to tell you a real story. My wife and I moved into an apartment for 4 Months to decide where we are going to move too, because we both lost our jobs. It happened about 2 months in living there, when are Van was broken into. We were living in the nice area of Canton back then. That is when we decided to move within 2 more months out of OHIO. Canton is not a safe place anymore because of the high unemployment and the low life’s that come with it. The people are rude and do not care about anybody else but themselves that live there. This also includes people that go to church there. I could not believe how church people act there now. Canton change for the worse, this is when I left in 1988 and went back in 2005. I do not recommend Canton, Ohio for any young person to raise a family there.

NO on Canton, Ohio.. - 8/7/2006

For a city of only 79,000.. you have a high concentration of LOW LIFE.. WAY too much, with people just out "milling around".. looking for something to get into.. A lot of sex offenders, ex cons, and the same people in and out of jail, wrecking havoc on peoples lives.... HOOKERS galore, pimps, drug dealers, and people just screaming in the streets, in the middle of the night, early morning.....CHEAP housing,is expected, and is...The really oustanding things, are that the City of Canton, has a GREAT mayor, Mayor Janet Weir Creighton, and just as outstanding, is the Canton City Police Chief, Dean McKimm..ALSO, Canton has a terrific police force...Unfortunately the mentality in Canton, what there is of it, goes in a big circle, and ends up where it started..NOT a people, with vision, for the most part..... A very prominent "redneck" attitude, prevails, and if you go outside the general mode, people run for fear of the unknown..Very clannish and clicky, with a small town mentality....LOTS of crime, and low life behavior patterns..Canton is trying to make a comeback, and no one could be in a better place to make that happen, then the current Mayor, and the current Police chief, mentioned above.....People with a normal lifestyle, and the $$$$ to get out, FLEE to the burbs, where they can buy a decent car, without the fear of someone looking in it by day, and breaking into it, by night..Someone banging on your door to "use the phone", or hitting you up for 'a ride".. MANY alcoholics....with people just milling around, block by block....Yep, thats Canton, Ohio....HIGH tolerance and "Pity" for criminals, with Cantons HUGE array of "social helps groups", and very little justice, for those living right.. HOWEVER, the Canton Police Chief, DOESNT play that, and neither does the Canton Police Force....
