My Hometown - 2/8/2018

Denzel Washington says if you don't listen to the news, you are uninformed, if you listen to the news you are misinformed. There is a lot of bad press about Flint, and like Mark Twain said, there are 3 types of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics. That being said, I have lived in the area for 66 years minus my two year draft stint. Flint is a gateway to the wonderful great lake state! The downtown has seen quite a revitalization going on, we are spoiled in this area, if we have to wait through two traffic lights we get angry ! Easy to get around with our highway system, and quick to get out of town to destinations around the state. Both alpine and nordic skiing is in abundance here, I visit Mt Holly Ski resort in Holly weekly in the winter months. Oh by the way, this website says we get 30 some inches of snow a year, it is actually 48 on average. As of Feb 8th 2018, we already have over 52 ". THat is why it is called the water winter wonderland in Michigan !

If only the main problem was rust! - 9/2/2017

Why anyone would want to live in Flint is a mystery to me. I suspect the main reason for the below average cost of living is the water problem. Because of this housing is cheap, since one cannot sell a house in Flint for anywhere near its value if it were in another city. Also, the winters are not very pleasant. Flint basically is just another rust belt city where people live who can't afford to move out.

No mortgages needed but high property taxes - 4/28/2017

Flint has a lot of pros and cons The pros; The University of Michigan has it's medical campus, law, economic, science and historical campus here. Ann arbor has the arts, humanities, social sciences bussiness and sports. You can buy a good house for under $40,000 Their trying to re develop the city Clean air and lots of parks Not as much of a police city like Chicago Good old fashioned fun It's like being in America in the 1970's Cons High property Taxes Blight Crime lead in older homes made before ww2 A lot of alcohol consumption A lot of single moms and a small police department thats overwhelmed

Coming Home - 3/7/2012

I have lived in Jacksonville, FL for the past 11 yrs and am coming back to Flint because my family is still there. My mother, aunts, and uncles are retired GM employees that chose to stay here in Flint and I need to raise my children around a loving support system.Long ago I said that I would never return because of the negative reports that I've gotten. But I'm willing to take a chance on the city that I once loved by doing my part in the community, in hopes of helping to get it back on its feet.I'd love to have the name of your blog.

Have Faith - 8/7/2011

After reading many of the former comments, there are a lot of mixed views on Flint. Flint was once a great place to live with plenty to do and a provided a good quality of life. Everyone wants to blame everyone else but, refuse to accept personal responsibilty for their own actions and their young children's actions. In order to have a restored city, we need restored people. It's hard to enjoy a dinner out or visit the local mall without chaos forming. Everyone should do their part to be respectful towards others and the businesses' that are here. There has graffiti on former and active businesses', trash all along the city streets and local highways, and residents that will cut the grass nor pick up their own properties. There is a negative attitude amongst most of the residents here-- impolite, demonstrates anger, disrespectful towards others, no self-respect, no hope, no emotion, feels everyone owes them something and an apparent lost demeaner. Flint has great potential... WE NEED TO CHANGE!!! Become a part of the solution and not part of the problem !! 2 Chronicles 7:14 " If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Contradictory - 4/10/2011

Your reasoning sounds a little contradictory or denial of the reality of the climate in our city. Don't you think that Public schools are a reflection of our communities. When we chose to send our kids to a private school as opposed to the public schools which is an indicator of how well our cities are doing what statement are we really making?

Horrible crime rate - 3/14/2011

Flint has broken its past record of 63 homicides in 2010. The place is termed as "killer field" by the flint police department. People are insane and use guns to settle petty amounts owed, if not paid. The city has seen a high number of arsons in 2010 and every empty house has been vandalized and destroyed inside and outside.

Ready to move...long time coming! - 12/28/2010

The city is very high in crime. Most of the people are closed minded and do not fight for their city. I live in a somewhat nice neighborhood where it is very family oriented. Most of the families are working families. So thieves are breaking in our homes all the time. Just alone my home was broken into two times this year! Tax paying citizens are allowing the mayor to lay off police on a regular and the criminals are taking over the city.

Flint's population being over 400,000 - 11/19/2010

I don't know who came up with this number. This place is a ghost town, every other house abandoned, no jobs, crime rate qualified us to be one of the worst cities to live in america, wow. The population is dropping dramaticlly and society needs to know the truth. 400,000 people is soooo not true. 2008 it was reported at 112,000 and believe me it is lower today.

Crime - 6/8/2010

Crime is really high in the city. The mayor made a decision to cut 46 police officers leaving the city to the criminals. Someone is dying all the time or being robbed. There are barely any jobs in the city and many are receiving unemployment.

Flint is a great place to live - 3/27/2010

My is Marta, and I was the president the Mott Park neighborhood in Flint, MI for three years. I live with my husband and two children that I homeschool. Flint is a great place to live and wonderfull things are starting to happen here. The city is going thru a transition from an industrial car hub to a university and research hospital center. You could divide Flint in the "old Flint" and the new Flint. The old is people that worked at the factories and were used to GM to take care of them, forever. GM was the authority that dominated their lives and they complained, but they expected that things would be solved for them, by others...their bosses. The new Flint, most of them young people know that companies come and go and they are not forever to take care of your needs and your family needs generation after generation. This is the group that is creating very interesting things in Flint. they are entrepreneurs, artist and love Flint with the good and the bad. They are the ones who go to meetings, and organize festivals and celebrate each of the good things that are starting to happen around Flint. I am willing to help you with information about this town because we need more creative people to come here to help us solve problems and not to hope that everything will be perfect. We have great things like the Flint Cultural Center, the Flint Farmer's Market, The University of Michigan-Flint, Kettering University, very generous foundation like the CS Mott Foundation, the Ruth Mott Foundation, great restaurants in downtown Flint and coffee shops like the Lunch Studio or the Brown Sugar Cafe or the Good Beans Cafe, etc. We have institutions like the Flint Institute of Arts that is fenomenal, and the Flint Institute of Music; we have the Sloan Museum and the whiting, and the list goes on and on. We have great parks like Kearsley Park and Mott Park my neighborhood, and very affordable properties. The schools are not great, but with the price of the houses you could send your kids to private schools that are very, very good like Saint John Vianney or Saint Paul Lutheran church. If you are the kind of person that like to be involved in groups, or activities, or theater and art, come this is the place for you. ..I have started a blog to let people know how great is Flint; you need to come visit us and see I (I do not want to put the name of the blog because I do not know if it is appropiate), but the idea is to tell how a mother with two kids really live in Flint MI. Give Flint a try, you will love it! Marta

FLINTSTONE FOREVER! - 12/25/2009

My name is Michael Green. I used to live in Flint, Michigan. I went to Bunche, Longfellow and Northern! I graduated in 1981 and immediately went into the service (U.S. Navy). I would visit every opportunity I could while in military and would see the city gradually declining. I miss EVERYTHING about Flint. From Roulettes skating rink to Forest Park! Flint will NEVER be the same from the 70's and 80's! From Vanwagner Street, Mason Street, Dayton Street, Saginaw Street, Clio Road, Pasadena Street, Barth Street to Mallery Street, I will ALWAYS claim Flint as my home!!

SHAME ON U - 9/28/2009

SHAME ON YOU!!! I am so tired of people like you saying negitive things about a city and people you don't know anything about. Burton ain't nothing but a hole in the wall itself. There are alot of people in Flint care about where they live. It is a shame how people can talk about a city but will drain it dry of it's resources. I bet 30% of the people you know work in Flint. Sucking up all the jobs from the people who live in the city and go home and complain. Get a job where you live if Flint is so bad then we will see your pretty little Main St. homes turn into the slumms and ghetto. That goes for all of you stupid people that just run your mouth about negative issues in a struggling city. People who live in Owosso, Burton, Mt.Morris, Flushing, Clio, Genesse, Fenton, etc. This goes for '''U'''

Flint! - 12/28/2008

Well...I am studying to be preservationist. And the situation in Flint right now is simply pathetic! Ughhh...it makes me sick to drive around Flint and see all the history of this once great town decaying and evaporating like water as quick as you can say "stupid" Most prople just don't care! Our whole city is going down the drain with GM and Ford, and well, the mayor is helping any! They act like they are trying to fix up all of the decaying buildings in the historic districts that were torn down by ignorant self-centered loonitics! They are so lazy that they can't preserve our great history, because we are so poor! Flint is Discusting and full of lazy people who just don't care! I'm not going to keep quiet about this anymore, because this is a subject of matter that just doesn't need to be kept "shushed" any more!

Depressing, Depressing - 11/20/2008

I am originally from around the Flint area. I recently went back for a visit. I have traveled to many, many cities and have never found one as depressing as Flint. Boarded up stores, rude people, high crime and the downtown looks like a horror scene right out of a movie. I am so thankful I moved to Fort Wayne!

Flint Michigan - 2/26/2008

Hello Well, there isn't much to say here------I have lived here all my life while working for General Motors. The town is simply depressing with not much going for it. The overall attitude of the people is depressed it would seem. The only good thing I can think about Flint Michigan is the low cost of housing. However, with the continued downsizing of the auto industry the economy is continually getting worse along with the crime rate since Flint's economy is largely based on General Motors. Darrol
