Ready to leave - 12/30/2010
My wife and I left Anaheim, CA in 2005 to live in Scottsboro, AL so she could be near her mom who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease. We knew her mom's end could be near but we were prepared to stay as long as necessary. While living here, we decided to work and pursue college. I was quite unfamiliar with the southern way of life but Scottsboro offers an obvious sampling of what living in a small southern town is all about. The culture shock for me were such things as the dialect, the conservative mindset, the "southern hospitality", the Civil War celebrations, etc. Those things were not necessarily bad. And the low rent, affordable housing, down-home cooking, and slow pace were certainly positives. However, what really works against the grain for me as an African American is the bigotry and racism I've encountered here in this small area. Let's face it. You can find that kind of ugliness anywhere. But in larger urban areas, at least you have more space to move around in, to Read More

Where Dreams Come Ture - 2/22/2008
I moved to Scottsboro in the summer of 1981. I arrived with a suitcase full of hopes and dreams, a one year old little boy, and my nurses license. Now it is 2008, I am older, and want to say 'thank you' to the small town of Scottsboro. You provided me the space for many of my hopes and dreams to come true. You helped me birth two more children, and allowed me to help many of you give birth to yours.

We went to T-ball games, basketball camp, band concerts, fund raisers, plays at Northeat Community Collage, and wrestling matches. And yes!! Remember the year we won state !!! We've built Habitat houses, resuced spunklers [we have more caves in our county than most states have all together] washed cars, sold Christmas trees, parked cars on First Monday Trade Day. All to raise a few dollars for some various cause. Most of the time it was us parents working while the kids were off 'running errands or 'whatever.' For most of us it was just a part of our social structure while Read More

Well kept secret. - 3/16/2007
I feel as though I live in one of the best kept secrets at least in the south, Scottsboro, Alabama. I am originally from Rhode Island but have lived here for almost eighteen years. We enjoy the Tennessee river including beautiful Lake Guntersville. You can travel to Chicago or Fla right from your boat slip if you have enough boat. We have some of the best hunting land and fishing you could ever hope to find. Beautiful neighborhoods and rich local history. Fantastic golf with four courses in and around Scottsboro and proximity to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. We are only 40 minutes from Huntsville, an easy commute on Rt 72 nearly void of traffic lights, if you seek a high tech job there. Chattanooga is about an hour away, Birmingham, Al is 90 miles, Atlanta is 128 miles, Nashville is a little more than two hours away, Knoxville too. We are centrally located to all the South has to offer. Five to six hours will find you on the gulf coast. The climate is seasonal but Read More
