North Pole Alaska - 11/29/2009
Our winter normally starts in september and ends mid april with brake-up. This is when the ice and snow goes away for the spring to come. We will get the coldest winter in jan and feb. That temp could reach -50 on a good day but mostly will be -30 with some -40. The spring will begin in may with temps being 40 to 50 above with the rain starting mid may/june, But by july we will be 70 and lots of sun, about 22 plus hours.Aug 80 to a couple of days in the 90's with some rain. Beautiful Interior Alaska - 5/12/2009
I have lived in Alaska for 14 years now. The first 2 were in Anchorage. Anchorage and its surroundings are gorgeous, but I prefer the solitude of Fairbanks and vicinity. I live in North Pole, Alaska.. and yes, there is a Santa Claus. I can see him most days at his house just down the road from where I live. As far as the area goes, it's an amazing place to live. The cold is beginning to get to me and my body. As a disabled Vet, it's getting harder to get around when it's -50 and colder.

Costs too High - 4/14/2008
I have lived in North Pole, a suburb of Fairbanks for over 5 years. In that time my fuel bill has increased dramatically. I paid $270 per month in 2003. Today I pay $815 per month. Unless your income is at least $50,000 per year with no debts or mortgage payment, it is very very difficult to make ends meet. Although I am retired military, the pay is not sufficient to survive on. I am seriously considering selling my home this year or next and move to a lower cost area in the lower 48. Any suggestions?? I have no family or relatives in the lower 48. I will definitely miss the beautiful scenery summer and winter. However, winters are a little too harsh for my liking.

We've lived in Alaska since 1999, the winters are getting more mild each year (global warming makes the newspaper front page often). There are only a couple weeks of -30 and a few days of -50. Each summer has been different. One summer I wore shorts all summer and went to the lake. Another summer we had so many fires you had to wear a mask and wipe the ash from your car before you could drive. One summer I was only able to wear shorts one day. This summer (2007) has been beautiful, not too many mosquitos, bees or fires, lots of blue skies with white billowy clouds. I wore pants all summer, but had short sleeves. Late this evening my dog and I walked the 2.5 miles into town and checked our mail, the bank temperature sign said it was 34 degrees. It only felt like 50
