Tucson, Arizona: The best of the West - 6/2/2009
I have lived in Tucson for 10 years now, having moved from California in 1999. If you love a desert environment and city services and variety without that big city feel, you will probably like Tucson.
Tucson has all the beauty of the desert surrounding it. We have four mountain ranges around the city, and it's an easy drive to get into them and out of the city when you need to. One of the things I've always loved about Tucson is that it still feels like a smaller town, but has all the facilities of a bigger one like Phoenix, and much more beauty. We also have an artist heritage, with many fine artists in the community, as well as writers and one of the finest universities in the nation, The University of Arizona. We also have many fine museums in town.
If there's anything to complain about, it is that the city has grown too much too fast in the last 20 years. We who love Tucson want to keep that friendly, small town feel, and we feel too much growth will

I've been in Tucson now for 26 years - 5/11/2009
I selected the city on purpose after exploring the whole west. Moved here from Santa Barbara and liked it far better here immediately. It was like night and day, even though everybody in Santa Barbara seemed convinced its heaven on earth or something. Nicer people, nicer lifestyle, nicer culture, nicer nature, nicer restaurants. You make some sacrifices to live here, the biggest being lower pay and some pretty bad local employers. You have to like the weather; I do. The heat of the early summer is like a free sauna, then the monsoons hit and its like a free fireworks display. It's a poorly educated place despite hosting a big University. The U is quite shockingly spotty. It has a few great world-class departments, a bunch of very bad ones, and a terrible obsession with team sports. This is mainly because the Arizona state government is quite poor and crooked. And it is also not a good city to be single as others here have pointed out. If you're married or retired, though,

Tucson is friendly- but the lack of green and wate - 4/21/2009
I've only been here a short time- but the intense "dry" with lack of close lakes and "grass"- is hard for a dog lover. We can't let the dogs out for too long- from April to October for fear of scorpions, rattlesnakes and - well- heat. So, it has been an adjustment.. it's beautiful near the foothills and the adobe house and buildings are great. People are very friendly- the ones who live here- But with the influx folks from around the country- and many of the seniors- the drivers here are very scary...
I wish the city would do more to "green it up". It's a beautiful city that seems to be falling
